This is the work of a collaborative effort between myself and Jymset. We both think it turned out rather well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
In the wake of the new alliance between the Federated Suns and Lyran
Commonwealth, the newly-formed Federated Commonwealth sought out to represent
the steadfast might and dedication of the fledgling AFFC in every possible
way. This resulted in the most extensive series of new designs that the Inner
Sphere had seen in 200 years. The first military craft that came away from
this initiative was the aptly-named ALI-1A Alliance, a 100 ton assault ‘mech
(see the December 3028 issue of the Battletechnology magazines for details).
Next on the list was a new 100 ton tank. Both the Federated Suns and the Lyran
Commonwealth had so far mainly used lighter designs, the only known 100 ton
tank was the Behemoth, manufactured by Aldis Industries in the Capellan
Conferderation - the arch enemy of the Federated Commonwealth! Hence, this
project was also one of prestige, and it was given highest priority. To ensure
a successful design, it was decided to create two designs and to later assign
them to the same units.
The staff at General Motors was charged with the creation of the Davion
vehicle. For a time, the designers were stumped. What could they do that
hadn't already been done? One day, the lead designer, an avid history buff,
saw a picture of an ancient tank, one of the first ever designed. Inspired by
this vehicle, the Char-B, he set his design staff to work designing what would
become the Renault.
Meanwhile, the Lyran contract went to the Vehicle Division of Defiance
Industries, which was already very successfully producing the Rommel and
Patton tanks. Very early on, the decision was reached to utilise a fusion
engine in order to reach a faster speed than an ICE engine could ever yield.
Most military vehicles of the Lyran forces, including the common Manticore MBT
and Hunter missile tank, were also equipped with fusion engines, meaning that
tech crews assigned to tank commands would not face major obstacles in
servicing the designs. And being commissioned by the economically strong Lyran
part of the Commonwealth, Defiance felt free to include the best. The new
design was to be the Montgomery MBT, named after yet another obscure Terran
general (apparently a counterpart to Patton and the foe of Rommel - to be
taken with a grain of salt, as with any ancient legends).
When GM was informed that the Lyrans were designing a faster, more
heavily armed tank called the Montgomery, they changed their own vehicle's
role, to better compliment the Lyran design. Since the Montgomery was more
powerful offensively, they decided to make the Renault as defensively strong
as possible. To this end, they packed on as much armor as they could onto the
vehicle's sturdy frame, increasing the vehicle's weight from 80 tons to 100
tons in the process.
==Capabilities:==
The Renault quite differs from modern design techniques, as it doesn't
mount all of its heavy weapons in the turret. Instead, the vehicle's heaviest
weapon is housed inside the main body, with only the lighter weapons being
carried in the turret.
The heavy weapon being carried inside the body is the powerful and
dependable Pontiac 50 autocannon. While not quite the "knockout punch" that is
the heavy weapon of most tanks, the Pontiac is an excellent weapon, especially
when put together with the rest of the Renault's arsenal.
The Montgomery, on the other hand, very much shows the influence of its
parent designs. A modified Rommel turret mounts the usual ‘Mech Hunter
Autocannon and Coventry Missile System, but also adds a coaxial PPC which
suspiciously looks like the Parti-Kill design of the Manticore. Should any
trade treaty exist between Defiance and TechniCorp, it is surely one of the
Inner Sphere’s best guarded secrets.
For long range engagements, the designers of the Renault at GM originally
wanted to mount a Farfire Maxi-Rack, but the weapon's weight slowed the
traverse rate of the turret by almost 10%, so they settled on a Valiant
Arbalest 15-rack.
The Renault's all-range power comes primarily from the high-powered Flak
autocannon mounted on the turret. Able to destroy most lighter vehicles and
'mechs with only a few salvos, the Flak cannon makes the Renault a true
threat, especially to enemy aircraft, who are notoriously succeptable to
accurate ground fire.
The Montgomery was originally only to mount a plethora of machine guns
and an obligatory flamer in its hull, making it all but impervious to infantry
attacks. However, after seeing the projected performance of the Flak
autocannon during a meeting with their GM associates, the engineers at
Defiance decided to accommodate for this gun. Since construction of the hull
had not been completed yet, it was relatively easy to fit in this formidable
weapon. Firing out of the glacis plate, it adds needed long range firepower,
though its dual role as anti-aircraft gun can no longer be realised.
Realizing that the vehicle they had designed so far was a capable ranged
fighter, the GM designers decided that the vehicle needed more short-range
power, to deal with anything that made it through the hail of LRMs and
autocannon. To this end, the Renault is equipped with twin Holly-4 Pack
missile systems, and a single 20mm Gatling Gun.
Certainly the most outstanding feature of the Renault is the armor.
Carrying more than 25 tons of Pantherskin VII armor, the Renault has thicker
skin than some dropships! The Montgomery, on the other hand, mounts just under
15 tons of armour - in excess of most other heavy tanks, but only half of the
Renault.
==Deployment==
Currently, the GM vehicle plant at Kathil is only able to construct a
small number of the new Renault, and can only manufacture about 12 tanks every
two months. The Defiance factories, however, are much larger, and are
proportionately able to manufacture more Mongomerys, at the rate of 12 tanks
in just one month.
This arrangement has worked to the Commonwealth's advantage, however.
Field tests of the two vehicles together showed that the optimum deployment of
Renaults and Montgomerys was to have two Montgomerys for every Renault. The
Renault can be used to hold a battle line or box in enemy forces, using its
massive armor to prevent enemy troops from shooting their way past, and the
Montgomery, with its heavier weaponry, could move in to engage in close
quarters.
As of this writing, one mixed battalion of Renault and Montgomery tanks
have been deployed. It is stationed with the Davion Assault Guards RCT, where
it has already performed quite admirably.

Thanks for that, Warhammer: 3025, it was a lot of fun. Should Mordel ever put up a tank section in the TRO, we'll have to submit this!
So what do you guys think? Is the fluff ok? Are the tanks any good? Do you want to know more about the Alliance? Or about my dog?

Unlike some people, I'm not ashamed to beg. Someone please, say something about our two designs, else I'll start to cry.

Well, seems that we are in an empty palace, shouting to each other, Warhammer: 3025. For what it's worth: I think we've done a rock-solid job. Those tanks are some mean SOBs!
Fairly hollow praise, eh?

Like a wise man once said: "postings drop dramatically over the weekends." Give it time.
This from a guy who just yesterday threatened to cry if nobody said anything.

these two do go very well together as one`s weakness is offset by the others strength i am`nt a huge vehicle user so look to some one else for the indepth report my only thought is what about AA mybe design a vehicle to protect these two from fighters and VTOLs as they are (mentioned inyour fluff) a weakness both units have

That was the idea. One offensively powerful tank, and one defensively powerful tank.
As for the AAA vehicle, why design a completely new tank, when the Partisan still works so very, very well? Besides, the AC/5 on the Renault is dual-purpose, and one of those purposes is to shoot down enemy aircraft. As stated in the fluff, the Mongomery's hull-mounted gun is incapable of AA-fire, but the Renault's turret-mounted gun is free and clear.

I think they're both good assault tanks. Having said that, I have no use for assault tanks.
I use light hover craft to carry most of my vehicle guns, and usually stick to only artillery, infantry and aerospace to support my mech units.
