If you go to the http://www.kongisking.net/index.shtml site where Peter Jackson's next film, the remake of "King Kong," is being chronicled, the latest video update recounts his attempt to recreate the navy Curtiss Helldiver fighters from the period (circa 1933). Turns out that there are no surviving examples of this plane in existence, either in museums or even as models for purchase, so he got the blueprints from the Smithsonian and built some non-flyable but realistic life-sized versions. As Jackson says, "Planes and guns. Big model planes. That's cool."

Interwar aviation is not my main area of interest and I don't have my sources , but the planes of King Kong ain't Helldivers, that's a WWII bomber.
I think you wanted to refer to Curtiss Hawk.
The aircraft that downed King Kong were
Curtiss 2 seater planes, not fighters.
EDIT: Okay, found it, damned Americans and your mania of recycling aircraft names, yes, Karagin was right, they are indeed *Helldivers* but 99% of us think about the WWII divebomber
the biplanes are F8C Helldivers

The Navy has always recycled names as has our Air Force...common pratice.
I wondering how much money is spent on the naming process? LOL!

There was a frigate (1800s) named the Enterprise, then two aircraft carriers...I think that is it, but would need to consulate a couple of books.

Actualy there were 8 ships commisioned into the USN as USS Enterprise And more Enterprises including 12 HMS Enterprises and 8 French ships

Actually the military is pretty imaginative, how do you think we got the stealth fighter? Congress? McNamara during the vietnam era gave us the F111 "multirole fighter" he was Congressionally backed. what is it now? A bundle of circuitry that stays away from the shooting! The M16 was also a McNamara brainchild, it took 2 versions to get a real weapon. The original M16's were made for the AirPolice to guard planes and runways, lots of concrete, not so much mud. plenty of supply and repairs. Give it to the USMC and Army and what do you have, guys out in mud and weather and supplied with what they carry on their backs.
I had and M16A1- barely acceptable in boot camp and the first few years of my service. It only took a small amount of sand and about 1000 rounds to begin the stoppages. The sand due to the Beach I crawled across in the morning, and 1000 rounds was about a days worth of serious shooting. Which means that I have to spend about 3 hours worth of time during the day cleaning the rifle so some natine doesn't get me with a stone club. Stone club vs fiberglass club. The mass of the fiber glass club (gunstock) results in SORE hands the first time you block the stone one. then you will need the shovel because the fiber glass stock bent- now shooting is useless too.
Sorry end of rant. The A2 finally fixed things, they "loosened up" the rifle with more "generous tolerances" chromed the bore to prevent "carbon" buildup, and lengthed the stock a bit so the bigger troops could actually get a good stock meld. The weapon could shoot more reliably, so the Fiberglas Club became more of a non-issue.

From what I've been told, the M16 is still a pretty poor weapon, along with just about every 5.56 rifle out there. They just don't have the killing power to drop the bad guys quickly. The 5.56mm round was part of a military policy that said it was more efficient to wound a soldier than to kill them, since the enemy would then have to expend resources caring for that soldier. While that policy may have some kind of strategic value, tactically, it's just plain stupid. I've heard stories of people taking 2 slugs or more and still getting back up to fight. That's why one of the leading contenders for the US Military's new battle rifle was essentially a bored-out M4, converted from the weak 5.56mm to a man-stopping 6.8mm. Everybody I know who was in the military and was either old enough to remember the old M14 or got their hands on one later agreed that the entire M16/M4 family just sucked, except for the picatinny accessory rails, which they uniformly liked.

They are about as useful as my WWII .22 revolver. I could use it for home defense, but most likely will just piss off any intruder.

There's a reason for that: when converting from the metric measurement system to the traditional "caliber" system, the 5.56mm round measures out to a .223 caliber round. That's about zip-all difference between the 5.56mm and a .22, isn't it?
