Now, before I start, I know this hasn't been done in the last 6 months or so. Should there have been a poll like this in the last 7 months or so, please, chihawk, feel free to lock and/or delete this topic.

In the last weeks, there has been a lot of flak flying around for people liking heavy 'mechs. Yeah, I know, real men drive Locusts.

I don't know whether it was clear or not, but I had lots of polls up where I just compared 'mechs within a certain weight class - I think that great designs only become great in comparison to designs of equal weight. Thus it follows that 'mechs of any weight class could be considered "munchy", "unfair" or whatever.

There are designs I like and designs I don't like. The fluff and looks will always play a role, too. So, what am I saying (need to get to the point before blabbing too much)? I really don't care what weight classes people use. I would never pass judgement on that. (Of course it becomes iffy if you are trying to do some quasi-roleplaying by fielding in-universe units on the table) So I'm going to throw in this poll. And people, just be honest, let your preferences out.

As of now, lovers of assault 'mechs are in the defensive - that one will be the original and cool choice!

I myself would have to settle with heavy 'mechs. There is just the greatest and funnest variety in that weight class. Though mediums and assaults are close seconds.

Why do I like light 'mechs least? Well, they actually make for fairly single-minded games. Movement needs to be kept up. Alpha-strikes won't really harm anyone. Heat is only rarely a problem. And one mistake can kill you, which can be a bit of a downer in a friendly game (same as head-shot weapons).

So, how are assault 'mechs more varied? Well, simply because of the generally large choice of weaponry and the lack of heat sinks to use them all. You actually start juggling with ranges (yes, though slow, assaults are still capable of movement) and heat scales. I for one find that more amusing than always trying to stay in the dead arc and moving at maximum speed.

But yeah, mediums and heavies are the most fun. They allow for the best of both worlds - their weaponry is varied enough, sometimes they may even have heat problems. They will have enough speed to use it both strategically (as a measure of constant protection if you will) and tactically (like using non-optimal movement to get the range brackets right - this ties in to heavier armour). And since there are more 'mechs in the heavy class which I have an emotional bond to, I will choose them!

So, speak up! Do we have to bow to light 'mech pilots who like to think they are the only real men and are giving us a bad conscience by saying that? Or am I completely misguided and assault 'mech pilots are evil munchkin devils out to kill any and all fun in BT? You tell me!

I have to go with mediums. The medium category contains two of my favorite 'mechs of all time, the Shadow Hawk and Phoenix Hawk, and is the class I most enjoy working with when designing 'mechs, as testified by the fact that I have more custom medium 'mechs than custom heavies and assaults put together. The tonnage to mount just about every heavy weapon in the book, the armor to stand up to most heavies (and some assaults) for respectable periods, and the speed to maneuver: the medium class has the complete package.

i prefer heavies. They pack enough guns, enough armor to take a beating and Clan XL engine heavies can pack some moves as well.

Which means they are really fun. Not too mention that the heavy class boast 4 of the signature BT mechs.

1. Marauder
2. Warhammer
3. Rifleman
4. Timber Wolf

and who doesnt love this 4 bad boys ?

Despite my call for more mediums, my preferred weight class is Heavy.

GOod mix of stuff, cept exceptional speed.
Plus it includes the Summoner, Thunderbolt (it's ancient ancestor), Marauder.

Mediums for me, mediums have some really characters, such as the Whitworth, Griffin, Centurion and Hunchback.

They seem to have much more variation than Heavies and Assaults because many of the larger weapons simply can only fit in singles and pairs. Mechs like the Hunchy and Hatchetman or the maligned Blitzkrieg and Hollander II are designed around a single weapon.

Your main force mechs like the Centurion, Enforcer, Vindicator, Griffin and Phoenix hawks become the emblems of their Houses.

Whitworth is the emblem of heat management in the medium range, as is the Chameleon.

Firepower goes to mechs like the Bushwacker, Uziel and Shadow Hawk. Some of the tech level one Meds have equal firepower to the heavies (even discrediting the Dragons paultry array)

Speed mechs like the Cicada add flair to the battles, mixed with the firepower makes medium battalions exceptionally innovative and difficult to judge.

Fire support from Trebuchets and Dervishes.

Sniper support from Blackjacks and Hollander II's

Finally you have your tactical mechs which need to be used correctly to be succesful, like the Assasin, the Hermes and the Clint.

Well.

I don't really have a favorite weight class, so I chose heavies because it holds my favorite mechs.

However I play best with a mixed force, and I like fast mediums, powerhouse heavies, and slow big gun assaults. For my lights I love the ultra fast buggers with few guns.

Although I swear by the good old Centurian, I've found heavies give me the most cost effectivness followed closly by lights, then mediums THEN Assaults, though I've found assaults to be the most fun to design.

A standard company for me has this general set up:
4 Lights
2 Mediums
6 Heavies

It's always served me well.

Real men drive Locusts! I should know...I killed a Marauder with one. Backshots are a beautiful thing.

Jenners are nice too, and Panthers kick ass. What I'd really like to capture though is a Javelin.

Heavy. They pack the best combination of speed, armor, and weapons. And Clan heavies are just evil - 5/8 is pretty darn fast when you weigh 75 tons and pack CERPPCs.

Mediums and assaults are tied for second place. Mediums can pack a good weapons array or good speed (occasionally both), but their armor is a little light; especially in level two, where mediums pack gauss rifles and LRM 20s. Assaults have good armor and weapons, but they're obviously a little slow, which can be a problem.

I like lights least. They're a little too hit or miss, more likely to get killed by a single unlucky roll (or a mistake) than anything else. I don't like that. And all this dashing around doesn't suit me well.

Heavy, Assault and Medium are all close together for me, but when it comes down to it, it really depends on the kind of game I intend to play and opponent I'm playing.

I ended up going with heavies though for two reasons:
First, I tend to use more of them, simply because most of my favourite mechs are heavy and because I've had the most success with them.
The second reason is to do with their versatility. Most heavies have a nice combination of mobility (using only landspeed as measure), agility (through use of jumpjets), and firepower that makes them a good mech for offence, defence and raids.

That said, my favourite heavies have to be Grasshopper and the Daikyu.

Medium. Although light was very tempting to pick it has the best medium mech in the game. The Panther.

However, that being said I love the Shadow Hawk, Griffin, Whitworth too much to discount them.

As for clanners who doesn't like the Fenris or Viper.

Medium weights according to 3025 time were about 1/3rd of the IS. I play with more than that ratio even in 3025 regiment sized units. So I'd have to say their versitility is the best part. Enough armour and weapons to fight a heavy, or enough speed to fight with the light mechs.

As for assaults. I have very little use for more than a lance of assault mechs even in a regiment sized force. Even that lance is questionable.

Lights... and no, I don't have a superiority complex about it, no need to defensive. I love dashing around, hiding behind hills and getting backshots and kicks. May not be the most honorable way of fighting, but...
