With the US, UK and Germany all looking to update thier main battle tanks within the next ten years, and Russia, China and Israel's latest models being considered equal or better. I just thought i'd ask you guys what you thought and why.
P.S i originally write a small amount of information about each and why its a contender, but the internet crashed! And it took nearly an hour to write up. I may add the info again later with enough responses!

I am not familiar with most of those. FOr me it is a toss up betweent the M1A and the Challenger. I have to vote for the M1A just because it has actually seen quite a bit of action lately and has proved it usefulness.

It was a three-way between the roughly-comarable Challenger II, Leopard II, and M1A2 Abrams, because of their incredible toughness (thanks to their advanced Chobham armor). I like the Abrams best.

I'm being contrary here by voting for the Merkerva IV. I've read of war-games scenarios where the Merkerva beats the Abrams about half the time (maybe a little more) and the Israelis have seen a bit of action too.
Though, the Merkerva, Challenger, Leopard, and Abrams are all essentially the same tank...
(I know, they aren't exactly the same MBT, but they're all darn close.) _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

Merkava.
It also has enough space to bring an integral infantry squad (sort off...) useful in an urban fight.

I would have voted T-100 but they're not in full production. (AT least I think thats the new Russian tank) Uses Chobham style armour and seems to be roughly like a copy of a certain american tank...
LOL. More appeals to my sense of humour.

I also think that the Merkava is perhaps the best. Its stats are just phenominal and its one of the reasons why the US and UK want to update. For the last few years the lack of a major russian threat it seems they have been lulled by thier advantage. Israelis have saw more armoured combat than any other country in the world in the last 50 years.
Merkava is great, the best MBT and to boot it can take a few troops with it to nick the Syrians Wallets too!
My vote stays with the Challenger II, As the only Combat loss of one ever was to another Challenger 2! (At least, thats what my research shows) Despite the fighting around Basra. However in the Westrern world you have got to respect the Abrahams ts proved itself too many times.
Also i thought it was the Challenger which had the Chobham, thought i may be wrong.

The Abrahms, Challenger II, Leopard II, and possibly the Leclerc all have Chobham armor.

The LeClerc does not- France has been consistantly contrary, and do not belong to NATO. Therefore the powers that be do not quite trust them. I would not be surprised if France has their own Composite Armor. Chobham is definately used by both Challenger and Abrams due to the USA's special relationship with 'pops' across the pond
I would rank the Merkava 3 and Leopard 2 as very close seconds, both countrie are familiar with tanks and know how to use them.

It pains me to say this, (especially given my background), but tanks are dead. They are not as useful in the context of the missions being undertaken through out the world right now...
Tanks were great when we were fighting the Russian Bear, but now that we're fighting the Terrorist Snakes, tanks are out of place...
With that being said, the best AFV in the world right now for the terrorist wars is the Canadian Coyote Recce vehicle.

We need battle armour
That makes a lot of sense.
Protect your infantry from small arms and sharpnel, reduce the injuries they may take from big explosions.
It should also give them the ability to see in the dark, heat, round corners..
This together with small, drones that can be deployed by a single infantry squad..

Really? The CO of the US 1st Cavalry was extremely pleased with how his M1A1s performed in city fighting. Tough buggers that can knock down whole houses for leaning the wrong way. He wants more tanks and none of the pansy armored cars.
