Dragons are good mobile snipers, and Assassins are back stabbers par excellance. I've seen many an advance get hung up by the concentrated firepower of a couple of Dragons. Just don't try to use 'em as close assault vehicles.

I agree that Dragons in mass are quite the irritating prospect to face. the plink you with the AC's an the LRM's on top of it make for more annoyance. The problem is that his weapons don't have the ability to cause a piloting test until he gets his PPC as a Grand Dragon. _________________ ".... at one hundred yards. Volley fire, present! Fire! I never saw the use for Assassins. A LRM 5, a couple of Medium Lasers and a SRM rack never seemed like an effective use of 40 or 45 tons, even in 3025. As for the Dragon, it can be considered target practice, but you have to watch out for the Grand Dragons...

The key to the Assassin is it's mobility. Sure, it won't cause much damage any one round, but your chances of hitting it are very small. Any round where you win initiative you can definitely get behind something heavy and peel off some rear armor.
As for the Dragon, it's not ideal, but it's what the dice gave me.

That is where the fun begins. Learning to win with less than desirable mechs is a good challenge. If you always win easily and only use the uber-machines then you are losing some of the 'real battle' part of BT.
I personally like this Company. If used correctly it can do some good damage. I especailly like the Assasin - Panther combo. Both can harass from long range and the faster Assasins can lead opponents into optimum firing positions for the Panthers.

I want to add some conventional support as well. A platoon of choppers would be useful as scouts and spotters for indirect or semi-guided LRM fire. Considering that half of my company carries LRMs, this could be very useful.
A company of this size can support close to a battalion of conventional troops. A couple companies of infantry and associated support vehicles and a company of mobile fighting vehicles that could supplement the light 'mechs, so I don't have to send my heavies out on every raid.
A Kurita Shadow Hawk is probably my next big acquisition, but that'll take some serious politicing to convince the Bureau of Procurement to send me a medium 'mech before the Sword of Light snatches it up.

You forget the other part of the Lyran approach; put green pilots in those "useful" 'mechs.

No sense wasting a Veteran or Elite pilot in a light mech when you've got lots of heavily armed assault class mechs.
But interestingly enough, I usually DO put the worst pilots in the useless mechs. Figure they'll cause me less harm there.

I've never had a useless mech. I've always found a use for the mechs at my disposal.

I abhor waste. Mechs are so expensive already, even if its deem useless, i try to find a use for it.

Decoys. Guerilla fighters. Garrison mechs for backwater worlds. Polish mine detectors.

I expanded this unit out to battalion size and totally rearranged the 'mechs. The first company is the heavy company, the unit called in for conducting assaults. They've got a Firestarter and a Jenner for local reconnaissance, but the rest of the unit consists of line 'mechs. I grouped all of the machines slower than 5/8 into this group in order to keep the other two companies as fast as possible in order to make them more effective raiders. Only thing left to do is to determine what sort of support assets they'll have.

Nice composition. I like that you kept the use of mediums to a minimum. AS for support assets, how large a force? Another Battalion? Add a company of artillery, a lance of Maxim's with 4 platoons of infantry. 2 Lances of Bulldogs with another 2 platoons of infantry. One company of hovertanks. Sounds like a good mix to me.

I'm thinking hovercraft or VTOL support for the most part. I'm tinkering with LRM carrying choppers. The leading contender right now is a 30 tonner moving at 9/14 and carrying some mix of LRMs and SRMs.
