I give this one 4.5 stars. The only part I really did not like was the couple of preachy speeches. The battle scenes are outstanding. The costuming is spot on for the crusades. They picked all the right actors for the parts. If you like blood and guts and medieval warfare, then you will like this movie.

This one's on the list (after Ep III).

I found it interesting that after watching the promotional material and reading the reviews, I (who is famous for my historical nitpicking) was willing to give a pass on the historical anachronisms if the movie was good.

Sure, no one would have ever given a speach like the one Orlando Bloom gives on the walls of Jerusalem, but I can forgive that because its a really good speach. Just because the point of the speach won't be invented for another 900 years doesn't mean it can't be used artistically in a period piece.

Now, a historically accurate Crusades film could be interesting, maybe something like Gettysburg (please not like Gods and Generals). But this isn't a Crusades film. It looks like a serious piece of art about what is important and living together in peace. The Crusades make a good idiom for it.

All that to say, I'm looking forward to seeing it and hoping that Ridley Scott deserves the leeway I'm giving him.

This is how my wife put it. Ridley Scott wanted to make a war movie with a message about the current world problems. A movie about the crusades explains some of the hatred that still exists between east and west. It is odd to see a 'peace' speech in the middle of a movie that has so much blood in it.

It was common, I think. "We are peaceful! Let's kill all those god-hating heathens for the love of God and for peace!" See? All the warlike peoples really want is a little peace. That's why they're warlike, other people are bugging them.
