"Last Maglev to Clarksville"
Contact has been lost with a small outpost guarding a little hamlet and the maglev station that it got built around. The party is one of at least three patrols diverted from their routes to investigate.
What they don't know is that a commando OPFOR team with power armor support took the entire place. This unit, coupled with their carriers and items stolen from the garrison / police / citizens are now being used to defend the town.
About halfway to the little hamlet, the other patrols get jumped by OPFOR units. The party now has a choice to make: do they stop to help the other patrols, or do they run straight for the hamlet?
If they rush on to the hamlet, they will probably be able to wipe out the OPFOR team in short order and may even be able to jump the first wave of reinforcements travelling along the maglev; however, doing so will mean sacrificing the other patrols. Or, they could go to save the patrols (even then, which patrol gets saved first?) and in the process give the OPFOR time to get in reinforcements through the maglev line and dig in.
Thoughts?

Expect the unexpected here. There are a lot of ways the players can throw a monkey wrench into that one. Calling in arty to suppress the town for one, or completely bypassing the town and destroying the maglev rail line for another.
These "rock and a hard place" scenarios are pretty good if you space them out, but trying to make every scenario have a choice like this (to me) cheapens the idea. And your players will soon develop a resistance of sorts to the choices, opting for some unknown "option C" that you hadn't thought of.

Actually, I had some time ysterday morning (no net connection, basic satelite tier) so I just sat around trying to come up with stuff for a non-BTech fic series I'm doing; this one popped up as an idea.

It isn't much of a choice for me. Assuming that the characters have the kind of leeway necessary, they go for the city. The other patrols knew what they signed on for, the mission comes first.
Now, this assumes the players know that the hamlet is relatively ungarded at the moment. If they don't know that, then they go help the patrols because they assume they will need the most possible firepower to retake the city.
And yeah, arty or aerospace are good "option C"s in this case.
I've stopped doing this kind of stuff to my players. They never cooperated and I got tired of trying to hedge them in. Now I just let them go run havoc in the universe. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

Sorry, can't resist.....
"Take the last train to Clarksville,
I'll be waiting at the station.
You can meet me by 4:30,
For I've made my reservation.
Don't be slow,
Oh, no, no, no...
No, no, no.
Cause I don't know when I'm ever coming home."
Anyway.

I seem to recal a slightly similar mission in Mechwarrior 3. Well, the objective was nuking the monorail, so it's kinda similar.
