Id prefer to play the games straight up. No additional anything other than the patches needed to keep the game current and available for all. I mean, if 90% of everyone has the fancy patches and the rest dont (for one reason or another), someone is going to get more than a little torqued off. Better to keep an even playing field, as it were.
As for running around with a Flea, try taking an Uziel and make strafing runs with the PPCs. Ive used that one more than a couple of times, and its surprisingly effective.....

I wouldn't mind so much about the MekTek stuff if it didn't add so much 'other' stuff. While it's great to have all the extra mechs they provide, most of the equipment seems even more munchy than what is already in game. And I would really rather not deal with all the custom things they thrown in as well, both mech and equipment. If they are going to put in game, I'd much rather it be something that is actually IN battletech, than something that is not.

It's been my understanding that this is what MekTek has been doing, for the most part. Not creating things not already in BattleTech. I never saw anything real munchy in Mek Pak1. I didn't get much out of MP2 before I had to uninstall the game, so I'm not sure about it.

The other problem is that in order to play everyone using the MekTek games, you also have to have all those maps installed too. Which is not an easy download, provided you can even get them all.

What maps? I've never seen anything about maps.

And of course there also seems to be the problem that the MekTek patches are not compatible with the MS Addons. At least that's the problem I've had anyways.
|
|
Never had that problem. I recall having a Cauldron-Born (MS add-on) carrying MekTek weapons.

Your Flea will stand no chance once I figure out how to get an Uller A into MW-4...either that or I will kill you with my Puma...
Advanced Optics rock...

Advanced Optics is like a gimped deal though, its not even close to a real TC. Also i doubt you can snipe effectively against a Flea zig zagging.
An Uller will beat me though once he catches the Flea.

Most every time I attempted to play online using the MekTek patches, I was for the most part, not able to play because I did not also have whatever maps that were also being used in the games. Perhaps the games I tried to play in were all just custom games, but it seemed for the most part, that most if not all the games being played that also had the MekTek patches were also using custom maps.
And the patches do indeed include several custom items. Both mechs and weaponary. I'm not saying there is a lot, but they are there.

Mektek patches add a lot - either you have em or you can't join 99.9999999% of the public servers.
Maps work the same way - if you don't have the same one as the host you get bounced. 99% of the maps you need are hosted on Mektek. They are the Vengeance and Black Knight map packs. (Bascially just the old maps converted to use with Mercs.)
I still play a lot, and would enjoy jumping in, but I have the Mektek packs installed, and would be a pain to re-install just to play an occasional game.
On the other hand, I'd recommend that you re-consider trying the paks because:
They are free.
99.9999% of all open servers use em.
They do a lot to balance laser/ballistic
Most importantly: The additional Mechs. Lots of old school goodness in the Marauder, Warhammer etc.

Never played mechwarrior 4; I was looking at some screenshots from the Battletech 3025 game EA developed but cancelled. It's a shame they never brought that to fruition; it looked really good.

Ah, yes...I remember my Warhammer striding across the battlefield, laying waste to whatever lay in its' path...then those twin Dire Wolfs came out to play. Smoked one, but the other shot me in the back.

Does it come across as i am a massive fan of mektek? I hope so!!! Because its given MW mercs a new lease of life. And the uber fighters will be absent from a Mordel game.
I get the image of Mordel entering the battlefield in a solid gold and polished Atlas!

Well i would say that the few weapons and mechs that are custom compared to the huge amouts of other stuff its well worth it. Also the host can disable any mech and weapon he wants.
I mean think of it.
Warhammers, Marauders, Dashers, Grizzilys, Annihilators, Commandos, Avatars, Canis', Riflemen, Urbies, Cyclops', Hallander II's, Blackhawks, Grim Reapers, Solitaires and soooo many more, plus guns like LAC's Heavy and light machine guns, ATM's, Inferno's, ppc's with capacitators, and practically all level 3 weapons.
The mechs themselves are also done to a higher quality and accuracy than the M$ ones, look at the Mektek Warhammer compaired to the MS Gladiator. I mean even if you disable the extra weapons the mechs are a gift. I would be happy to e-mail anyone the nessicary patches, im not sure how big the file is but i can always try!

Truthfully, I actually didn't care much for the patches. Simply due to all the additional changes that were made and equipment added. Just more stuff than I really care to deal with. All I'm really interested in is the additional mechs. Perhaps if they managed to incorporate the mechs in the addons, I'd be more interested in using Mektek again, otherwise, considering the other concerns I've had with them, I'd rather not deal with the trouble.

Well. If Im going to patch a game, I download the patch into the file that the game lives in. For example, if I have MW4 in a Games folder on my C: drive, the directory I would put the patch into would be C:\Games\MW4.
Most patches have an extraction program, and for the most part they are completely autonomus. Download the patch, click the .EXE link (patch.exe, stuff.exe, something.exe) and it takes care of itself.

I was going to type a whole big thing here, but I'm not going to bother. MekTek has prepared official instructions of their own.
http://www.mektek.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=161
Note that the bulleted line "Goto MekTekSwitcher Download" is a link.
Note that they refer to two programs. First is the Switcher, which you will use to start Mercs. It will allow you to choose whether you want to play with standard PR1 (Point Release 1, the standard version of Mercs + MS's PR1 patch), or the MekTek version (MP1). The second is the patch exe itself.
Now that I look it over, I recall experiencing quite a bit of confusion myself in the process. And from MekTek's instructions, as well. I'd forgotten how confusingly MekTek's instructions were written. Give me till tommorrow; I'll install Mercs on my machine, then the patch, because I don't remember how I went through it before. After I'm done, I'll come back and tell you what I did, and in what order.
I hope I've got room for this and Halo, too. Why is there never enough hard drive space?
