If a person had a large enough caliber (such as .45, .50, or even 20mm) do you think they could take on a normal suit of Battle Armor and win?

20 mm sniper rifle with AP ammo, maybe some kind of portable gauss , hitting the head, dead Gnome

Anti-tank rifles from WWI and first half of WWII may be ideal for this task. They were powerful enough to pierce the armor of primitive armored cars.

I'm asking this for something I was planning.

As a part of a larger plan, an OPFOR unit sends in some battle armor to recon out an area near a major base. During the recon, one of the units steps on a mine; not only does this kill the pilot, but it provides a nearby infantry squad on patrol with a pretty good idea where the survivors are.

I'm thinking that the squad would either be machine gun or heavy rifle; haven't quite decided yet.

Those PBIs will need some pretty heavy stuff to kill a suit squad.

Your best bet (if you want them to have a fighting chance) is to have the squad be an anti-armor squad, loaded up with a few satchel charges, SRMs, etc. The average infanty squad with a few LAWs (or worse, VLAWs) would have no chance.

Now a platoon (or better, a full company) would have a much better chance of killing what remains of the armor squad.

The only way for infantry to counter the incredible power of Battle Armor is with sheer numbers of weapons.

Maybe portable infernos can kill BA quickly. Infantry in well prepared position (major base probably is well fortified) may have some heavy weapons in turrets, pillboxes or some light vehicles within reach.

Infernos maynot target Infantry.

But you can target the hex they are in.

somehow i knew you were going to say that....

How about pillboxes with support lasers, PPCs, big recoiless rifles, mortars, etc etc...

Man Packed PPC and recoiless guns are the way to go but most are too heavy for your average rifleman.

You'd need to lay an ambush with portable heavy weapons. The infantry would need to be in a forest, or better yet, a city. You'd need sneak suits to counter the IR capacity of battlearmor as well, so this is an expensive proposition we're talking about here.

Probably the best thing, if you could get it, would be field guns. Next best would be portable lasers or SRMs. I wouldn't want to try it with a machine gun.

An upgraded anti-tank rifle might be an ideal weapon for a special forces team expecting to encounter battlearmor. Wouldn't be very quiet though, so after the first shot goes off the enemy knows you're there. No quietly sniping off the sentries.

Battle armor is trying to sneak here, infantry squad will probably try to make some noise or lay quietly and call reinforcements.

I think that on defensive perimeter around major base with mine field there are troops just few minutes away. Patrolled area with mine field in the middle of nowhere looks strange.

I'm thinking a covered pit trap lined with explosives. How much do the BA suits weight? Also think booby traps involveing explosives. Branch bent back with shaped charge on it. BA suit brbeaks tripwire(which will be even harder to see from inside a BA suit) and the branch swings forward into the suit, contact sets off the charge. BOOM! Chunky salsa.

Here's how it works.

The area being defended is a couple of cities (each one has its own outpost) and a large military base (or two) in a low-lying area between hills. Note that many of these hills are wooded.

There's a number of booby-traps surrounding this area, such as landmines, pop-up weapons, bunkers, pillboxes, and the like. This is in addition to the guard towers and small outposts that everyone can plainly see.

A few months back, the OPFOR attempted an assault on the region involving two companies of mechs plus infantry and vehicle support (their air support was being used to create a diversion). They relied solely on satelite mapping for their recon, and as such blundered into a massive trap. The pass they chose was heavily mined, and had a large number of hidden weapons and pillboxes in the area.

The traps pinned the OPFOR in place long enough for artillery to get into position, which furthur hammered the OPFOR. The commander called for his air support to get the artillery, but along the way the fighters blundered into a platoon of LRM carriers and were destroyed. To add insult to injury, the defenders were able to move some VTOLs in place to snipe at the trapped OPFOR. The OPFOR took so long attempting to extract themselves from the trap that a lance of mechs was able to get into the area and start doing some damage. The lance pinned the OPFOR in place until said LRM carriers arrived. As you can imagine, it became an out-and-out rout.

As punishment for allowing himself to be taken in like that, the OPFOR commander was sacked and a new commander was put in his place. The new commander decided that although he too wanted to take the region, he was going to be more cautious about it. Rather than rely on satelite data alone, he was going to send in battle armor to scout.

While attempting to scout the area out, one of the squads winds up in a mine field. The pointman steps on one of the mines, doing some major damage to the suit as well as alerting people to their presence - specifically, said infantry squad on patrol.
