I've been reading my .PDF copy of the Periphery Field Manual, and I came across several references to the Clan's "Dark" caste. Who are they?
I know the Clan social order works out something like (correct me if I'm wrong):
Warrior
Technician
Scientist
Merchant
Labor
Where does the "Dark" caste fit in? What do they do? Why have I never heard of them before?

They are cast outs, renegades, disgraced warriors who have left the Clans and formed their own groupings. Some of them have dealings with the less then honorable Clan politicans and other ruling caste memebers who need something done yet can't do it themselves.
The Dark Caste are also considered pirates and fair game for the training of new warriors etc...over all they are a dumping ground of refuse of the Clans.
It would be funny if this is were the Word of Blake got it's manpower for it's hidden army from.

The loonies also like to think that the Dark Caste is more than just bandits and what not.

Makes about as much sense as any other explanation I've heard.

So on the whole, the Dark Caste functions like a criminal underbelly to Clan society? Do they still adhere to clan concepts and ideals, or do they function like Inner Sphere criminals?

Neg on the whole criminal idea. There are some criminal elements in the Dark Caste. But the cast on the whole is composed of those who were either removed from mainstream clan society, or removed themselves from mainstream clan society. They could just not buy into the whole concept of warriors being the lords and masters of all creation, they could, indeed, be criminals, or they could just be someone who got fed up with being mistreated and left their position in clan society to go someplace else.

Its not so much that its on a certain page in This or That book. Its stuff that we've managed to piece together as we read. For example. Clan Burrock was absorbed because of dealings with the Dark Caste. Ironicly, the complicity came to light while the Khan of Clan Burrock was trying to sever ties with the Dark Caste.
I havent found any info on, nor have I been able to put together, an accurate count of just 'how big' the Dark Caste is. They have warriors and machines, this much is certain. Techs, laborers, just about every caste can be found in the Dark Caste. Exactly WHERE and HOW MANY is anyones guess.

Hopefully they're so many that the true clanners roll over and play dead when all is revealed.
The clans are a bit like the old Soviet Union - everyone is a perfect little citizen or else. If they could escape they would. And most of the Sovs knew the government news was full of crap, propaganda and lies.

I think you need to re-read the Kerensky book again. It mentions a lot about the Dark Caste having criminals and other non-wanted elements from the Clans. Most are those forced out the Clan's rigid socitey and thus have to fend for themselves anyway they can. So as far as the Clans go they (the Dark Caste) are criminals and renegades.

Some of it's in the Children of Kerensky book, some is from the novels and other bits come from different parts of the sourcebooks and such where it get's mention.
There is NO one all defining source for info on this group.

Seems like there should be, doesn't it?
I mean, there's a sourcebook on just about everything else...
