I hereby declare the following games UNDERRATED!

Planescape: Torment. An excellent twist on the traditional RPG from the people behind Baldur's Gate and Fallout 2.

and

Far Cry. A fantastic shooter eclipsed by the twin giants released at nearly the same time, Doom3 and Half-Life 2.

Do you guys have any submissions to the list? Or have any OVERRATED games to point out?

Farcry is by far the superiour to both of those games. If you had given them different titles so they were not relying on thier prequels success Farcry would have squashed them both by far. Better AI, Setting, original storyline (Doom3 is Doom all over again in better graphics FFS!)
Halflife was appaling. Such potential wasted.

Farcry introduced the very first ultra realistic physics. Things don't die and lie flat over a hole because its foot is on a ledge. Shoot a guy in the head, his head jolts back, his limbs spasm, he falls back over a ledge and slowly slips over the railings lifelessly.

And those Trygents! Jesus its been a long time since a game has made me actually jump! But walking through a jungle with an M4 knowing their there but not seeing them till they leap out in front of you. By that time you dont have the chance to put enough rounds into them. Class game.

Oh and the Graphics!!!! The water looks gorgeous.

Then their the reactions of a squad. Crawl stealthily through the underbrush and use a silent weapon to pick off the commander and slowly take down the team. Ive seen troops actually panic, throw grenades in random directions and fire sporadically! You feel so much like a Predator!!!!

Yes i am definatley a fan!

Underatted games? Both Oldies but Dungeon Keeper 1 and Total Annihilation. You can stick your C&C Generals and your Age of Empires where the sun dont shine. TA was far superior to anything at its time. Graphics were astounding and battles of 300+ tanks planes and bots still looks amazing and is tense even today!

While I disagree with you that D3 and HL2 were poor games, I do respect your enthusiasm over Far Cry.

Dungeon Keeper was indeed a great game. Never played TA, so I can't have an opinion on that.

I loved Planescape: Torment...but unfortunately, about the time I was getting near the end, my computer started to have problems, and I never got around to finishing it...

Excellent game though!

Total Annihilation is my favourite game. There is a lot of fan sites and MODs for it.

well while i have enjoyed Doom 3 and HL2 i always felt Farcry was much the superior. I always felt that if you took the half life and Doom out of their names they would be rated and sold in equal measure.

HL2 was a good game. Accept it was like
'wow this is great, only a few hours in and im... oh thats the end!'

Yay! Planescape! I finished it with all stats at max fighter 12 / mage 8 / rouge 56 I'm going to play it again soon, but I lost my saves Best tactic I used was simple sneaking behind enemy, attacking and running away, something like pulse + TC + JJ in the city the enemies rarely followed me far enough. To the end I was able to kill those armored shadows with single punch. Some sayings were really good.

Never played Far Cry.

Both TA and DK belong to my favorites.

Basic TA has the best artillery I have ever seen (maybe Ground Control would compete with that, but this game wasn't underrated, was it?), and those nuclear barrages

DK was simply genial, and I think it was better than DK2.

Anyone played Spellcross? (old Slovak turn-based strategy orcs + undead vs. humans with modern technology (loosing side))

Yes DK was much much better. I sometimes still play the campaign even though i seem to no every level, monster, trap bonus and thier places inside out. Its still good.

TA was not underatted, but it was forgotten by the masses quickly. Me personally still think that one of the WORST things to happen to RTS was the introduction of a 3D camera. There was a time where the games didn't seem to have the graphics for such a dynamic way of playing. And suffered for it. Games like MTW/RTW are bringing it out the other side to dazzling perfection.
But games where the whole camera thing didnt work (IMHO) include
MC2
DK2
Force Commander (although it was nice, just not enough depth)
Theme Park World (not exactly RTS but you get the picture)
Platoon
There are others which escape me.

But I sooowished they had made more things for DK, it had such potential. Instead they made DK2 which lost the edge and just became stupidly childish. Massive micromanagement and kiddy jokes. DK1 had injokes (boulder traps! and the advisor bloke! he was so funny!)

I can still remember playing it around a full moon. The game uses the clock and strange thnigs happen around then, new levels. And the guy goes wierd. He once said to me
'Your Pants are definatley too tight!'

DK2 What the hell happened to the Horned Reaper? He looked too different, and was too much like a god. Didn't they realise The keeper is the hero (or villain) not him!!!

OK my rant is finished, ahh deep breath

Wow...

Far Cry's rag doll phyiscs are not new to Far Cry. You might want to take a few steps back to find where it came from. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 had these (not out of the box, downloadable from their respective "PlanetUnreal..." etc. And were actually in retail games far before Far Cry was ever demoed. Unreal 2004, Max Payne 2 and half a dozen other games had ot before Ubi-Soft said they were making a tech demo into a game.

You must be the only person I have ever talked to to say that Far Cry is better than HL2. And I talk to about 15 people a day about it (part of my job). What is appalling about it to you? Maybe you just dont like sci-fi?

TA was a great game...but suffered one terrible flaw. The sides were mirrors of eachother. They both had the same units and combat came down to who could throw the most firepower at the other. No tactics, no strategy except where to put your rocket towers. Its graphics were impressive at the time, being 3d, but the C&C games always had more flavor and color to them. Everything in TA was greys except for the land.

Now if you want underrated games, lets look at some real shiners. The best first person shooter of all time is System Shock. And some interesting mentions are Terminator: Future Shock and Terminator: SkyNET. Future Shock came out 10 months before Quake, and featured a fully 3d polygon engine, massive outdoor and indoor environments that have only recently been surpassed. Despite its bugs it was one of the most advanced, longest (20 hours) and scariest fps ever sold.

RPG Wise, its not underrated cause it held the throne for years, Daggerfall. Another from the same people that brought you those Terminator games. Prequal to Morrowind, but superior in all but graphics.

My opinion on the most underrated game of all time, though, is "Heroes of Might and Magic III" 3D0 and NWC got the formula for awesome game so perfectly with this game. For those of you who dont know the Heroes series, let me esplain a little.

The Heroes games are turn based large scale strategy where you build up your kingdom. Your armies are led by a hero who for most intenets and purposes is an RPG character (taken from the Might and Magic games). They have special abilities, level up, cast magic and wear items. Combat between heroes or monsters is pretty straightfoward, but great tactical manuvers can crush a superior force if used properly.

Thats the underrated game, IMO.

I believe he meant "appalling" as in "disappointing". The game had hype built around it for so long (SIX YEARS) that many, many people were disappointed, despite not being sure what they expected in the first place.

The game was quite stunning, personally. There were periods that I almost forgot I was playing a game. I felt kinda bad whenever my AI rebels kicked, and I loved it when they killed an enemy.

The ending left a lot to be desired, especially the final sequence in the teleportal core. A platform puzzle under fire.

The final ending, however, was exactly the same cliffhanger Valve has used for both the original Half-Life and Half-Life: Opposing Force, so I can't be mad at them for that; it's one of the trademarks of the series.

Valve's designers are great storytellers. They know just when to insert the interesting tidbits to keep you going.

Bungie could learn a bit from them.

Bungie USED to have good storylines. Until they got bought out by M$.

Marathon had good storylines and so did the Myth 1 and 2.

LOVE TA! Man I can still play that game for hours on end. My favorite tactic is to get a nice grouping of artillery and then making sure they have enough power just let em run, and run, and run. And to clean things up with nukes

Yeah boths sides were simular but the over all game was amazing.

Only one thing really strange on DK - the Avatar after all those armored knights there was a slim guy with helmet, T-shirt, backpack and katana, maybe some kind of joke, parody of RPG characters and then the outtro
