August 10th commemorates several important events:
*1519: Ferdinand Magellan's 5 ships set sail to circumnavigate the globe.
*1792: King Louis XVI is arrested, after the Tuileries Palace is stormed by rebels during the French Revolution.
*1821: Missouri is admitted as the 24th US State.
*1846: The Smithsonian Institution is chartered by the US Congress
*1893: Rudolf Diesel's prime model runs on its' own power for the first time.
*1920: Treaty of Sevres is signed, which breaks up the Ottoman empire between the Allies.
*1944: American forces defeat the last Japanese forces on Guam.
*1949: President Harry Truman signs the National Security Bill, consolidating the defense agencies of the US, and replacing the National Military Establishment with the Department of Defense.
*1977: David Berkowitz is arrested for a string of murders in Yonkers, New York. He was given the nickname, "Son of Sam" by the media.
1990: The Magellan Space Probe reaches Venus.

1492: Alexander VI is elected Pope
1918: World War I - Battle of Amiens ends.
1920: The Latvia-Soviet Russia treaty is signed. The treaty blocks all Soviet authority over, and claims to, the nation of Latvia and its' territories. The treaty was broken in 1940, when the Soviet Union invaded and occupied Latvia.
1929: Babe Ruth becomes the first baseball player in history to hit 500 home runs in his career with a home run at League Park in Cleveland, Ohio.
1934: Alcatraz federal penitentiary is opened.
1965: Watts riots begin in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California.
1972: The last US ground combat unit departs South Vietnam.
1991: Three original cartoons, Doug, Rugrats, and The Ren & Stimpy Show make their debuts on Nickelodeon. They have become some of the most popular cartoons in America.
