Which was your favorite, and explain why.
please note that all attending Expansion Packs have been lumped together with their respective games, with the exception of the "Mercenaries" expasions for MW2 and MW4, which were released as standalone games. If you prefer an expansion pack over any other game, please note it in your post.

MW 2: Mercs is the best one I've played to date. I have to confess that I never bothered buying any Mechwarrior games after MW 3.

While I like MW 4 Mercs, MW 2 Mercs is simply the best. It has a lot of missions, and a huge assortment of 'Mechs. I also prefer the more detailed, BTech-like MechLab to the more luser-friendly MW4 one. (And with the bugs, I seem to remember running a 120 ton Atlas. ) And most of the missions are pretty good, with a number of interesting twists. I particularly enjoyed the journal and the Solaris VII missions.
While we're on the subject: does anyone know of a good WinXP DOS emulator?

Good thing you didn't include MechAssault, that would suck the most as a battletech game... It's in a whole different dimension entirely..

MW 3 was the best in my opinion. In all of the others the only tactic you ever needed was to run circle around your enemies and shred them with your medium lasers. That didn't fly in MW3; you had to use the terrain to your advantage, engage at long range, etc. etc. Another nice touch was being able to move the targeting reticle independently of the 'mech's torso. You could set a straight course and then concentrate on firing your weapons, and not have to worry about straying out of where you wanted to be.

MechAssault isn't Battletech. They're sucky action games slathered with Battletech makeup.

MW2: Mercs by far. The most realistic MW game imo. The ACs were alittle let down though.
You actually had money problems in the MW2 campaign unlike the MW4: Mercs where you be one of the wankiest reinforced merc companies ever. 100 million C-bills was far too easily obtained while still boasting an entire arsenals of Omni heavies and assaults.
Not to mention the tech (RACs, Clan PPCs etc etc) you are putting on those machines. Almost felt like i was playing the 1st Davion Guards or Invader Galaxy of Comstar. The mech cost also did not scale up right. I don't see Daishis or Mad Cat Mk IIs costing 25 million C-bills which is pretty much standard for any Clan tech assault omni.
Too loser friendly is no good.
MW3 was good but they nerfed the Gauss rifle damage too much. It did like only half the real BT damage and thus I could not head chop mechs.

Mech 3 by far. it had the feel of what the universe would actually be like. The mech screens were great and the custimazation options were the best. Best missions and the fact that you could semi destroy the terrain was really neat.
Then came mech 4. Ugh what a let down by far the worst of the computer games. if you look closley it didnt count internals right and it was the first to introduce the idea that Timberwolves CANT MOUNT JUMP JETS. Hense the Timberwolf mk2. The entier user interface was a step back from the nice polished interface of mech 3. And they made it impossible to kill a mech by head hit. I had a custom Awesome with 3 clan erppc's on it and was walking circles around an Atlas, my targeting reticle NEVER left the head, I am watching the ppc's splash all over the head and the head went orange and that was it. It gave you way to much clan tech as well.

I loved Mech3, pre Pirate's Moon. Felt that it captured what CBT would feel like if you were actually there.
Obviously, you (can't remember who, someone with medium lasers) didn't go leg hunting. A few alpha-strikes from the Blackhawk can fell any mech. Clan ER mediums were boss.

My favorite is in fact the one you did not list. That being the original EGA Multiplayer Battletech that was on GEnie ages ago. God I loved that game. And since that isn't on the list, I must just go with MW1 instead. In a quick standard ranking, I would rank as such:
1) MPBT-EGA
2) MW1
3) MW2:Mercs
4) MW4:Mercs

I loved three. However it lacked a decent number of mechs. I have also always liked four. But yes it was nowhere near what i expected. It could have been sooooooo muc more.

Too bad in MW3, the gauss rifle can't headcap someone.
In MW2: Mercs. The Gauss rifle was my favourite weapon. I headcap Clanners aplenty with this bad boy, even though it travelled at slow motion.
MW4 has downright the coolest looking Gauss rifle effects. But 1 Gauss rifle is like a paper cut. Even with 3, you cant be sure you can kill a well armored medium if all shots hit the CT.

MW II: Mercs was my fav. OK, I was 8 at the time and I don't really remeber much. But I liked the money system and mech modification stuff, and was definetly BT as a FPS. MW IV...I mean...Some mechs heads have 27 EXTRERNAL ARMOR, and it goes on from there. I liked playing it but seriously...after a couple missions on Hallron V and selling all but a mech, I went to Solaris VII and had enough to buy a Daishi...

Hmmm...
As far as I can remember, headshots in MW3 were rather rare, almost unheard of.
I have only acomplished it once, to my knowledge, and that was tracking down from above a Daishi with heavy MGs (pirate's moon). Sure, they often crack your windshield, but actually getting a head kill is very difficult.
