About the only way to get a quad to match up with regular mechs is to put a long range weapon on them and use turret rules, along with the "hull down" optional rule. Even then you have to overspecialize the mech. Quads are the most guilty of that. either they are short range infighters, or a long range plinker. The short range infighter is stil disadvantaged due to lack of arms. The long range plinker usually doe not have effective short range weapons. I like to specialize mechs somewhat, but I also expect them to do adequately on their own as well.

Really? Ok...try this...take a Barghest, remove all weapons, upgrade armor to 13 tons ferro plate for full armor...add 4 DHSs for 14 total...now, in each side torso, add an ER PPC and an ER Med, add a Guardian ECM to the RT, add a Streak-4 to the CT forward, add a standard Med to the CT(R), add a ton Streak ammo LT with CASE...for the final slot and final ton, add a TAG system or another med to the head (I say TAG just for vesitility and if you run hot and have some Arrow IV or semi-guided LRM support units, you can still do something while cooling down)...
Now...are you going to say this QUAD WARHAMMER is useless on the battlefield? With full armor, full possible speed for its tonnage and weapons capable of doing 20 at more than 9 hexes and 28 or more (depending on how you want to work your heat) at shorter ranges?
I've already moddied one of my Barghests to this "Barghest Panzer" status (replaced guns with a Rifleman's arms (removing the forward portion of the lower barrels to simulate the ER Meds, added one of the removed barrel ends to the rear CT for the rear mounted laser, added a Warhammer's SRM pack on its side to the spot in between the Rifleman arms)...my other Barghest matches the HGR version (replaced the LB AC with a Gauss from a Hollander and the ER LLs with a PPC arm from a Warhammer/Banshee)...

The Barghest panzer sounds nasty, but it`s still a support mech. A -2 on piloting checks
doesn`t make up for the firing arcs in my book.
Pirate hunting? OK.
Killing Periphery raiders or garrison units? OK.
Front-line battle against level 2 IS or Clan forces? NO.
It might be interesting to test against a real Warhammer some time, just to see if the
quad compares well to it. _________________ A tree fall in the forest, and no one is around, and it hits a mime. Does anyone care?

One of my favorite parts of quads is that they can have more armor. When all those arm hits dont kill anything it can be pretty annoying.
BTW, if u punch or DFA a quad, even from the rear, is there anyway to hit the rear legs?

Regardless of arc, punches hit the front legs and kicks hit the rear legs.
Unless they've changed the rules since I asked about 4 years ago that is...

So if you kick from the front it hits the rear legs? Hmm, time for a new house rule for me.

That is the official ruling...I agree that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but this is Battletech and sometimes the rules are written for ease of play.
