Can some one tell me what this new movie and the Book have in common beyond the title?
Books had Muslim Terrorist blowing up the Super Bowl with a nuke, not Russians.
Jack Ryan is not a young kid just joining up with the CIA, hell he is almost 50 and is pushing a desk around...
Who's idea was it to PC this book for the movie version? Is it the same group that doesn't want any older movie or TV show shown that has the WTC in or a fleeting shot of it since they fear it will upset people?
Anyone plan on seeing this movie?

I do, but hey, it's dramatic liberties. Or poetic license. Or whatever the heck they wanna call it now. People don't wanna see a number-cruncher trying to save the world. _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Anything I say will undoubtedly incriminate me.

This is the first I've heard of a new Clancy movie. But I can guess why Harrison Ford won't be Jack Ryan again.
The last time the script got rewritten 3 times, until everything but the name was changed, like what the studio had promised Clancy would not happen. The first rewrite was because Ryan was in only a third of the book, and since they were paying Ford mucho bucks they wanted the star in at least half of the film. The last two rewrites of the script were due to Harrison Ford joining the ranks of people who think they can write Tom Clancy's books better than Tom Clancy can.
Clancy sold his books one at a time and swore those bastards would never buy another book from him. But the studio had bought the rights to the character Jack Ryan for longer, running 5 years after Clear And Present Danger came out. Harrison Ford even had the gall to push for making a Jack Ryan movie starring himself without Tom Clancy being anywhere near it.
And if you recall, the Jack Ryan we met in Patriot Games was supposed to around 30 or so and was done very well by Alec Baldwin who looked the right age and also looked somewhat Irish like Jack Ryan. Alec should have done Clear and Present Danger too, but he turned it down.
If I remember my reading right, in Sum of All Fears, Ryan is moving up from being an senior analyst in the ranks to taking over a deputy director position, but he is still supposed to be a guy in his 30s or so in that book. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

I was thinking of Red October, but I just wrote that bit wrong.
I used to be a huge fan of Ford, until he helped totally screw up Clear and Present Danger. Until Lord of the Rings came along I firmly believed that the only thing Hollywood could do with a really good book was screw it up on the screen. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

Not for nothing, but what the @$#@$! was wrong with LOTR:FOTR?!?!?!? That movie rocked! By far one of the best movies in the last 10 years (with Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon).
If anything it proved that Hollywood can still make a great epic movie, and perhaps even surpass the book.

I don't plan to see the movie. I have all of the books and even if they did follow them there is no way in the world they could get even a small part of the details right.
Beside they take out hte part where his wife lays the verbal smackdown on that like the national sercurity advisor. That is one of the best verbal smackdowns I've seen in a book or real life.

I've been seeing TV ads for Sum of All Fears. In one of them I could swear there was a carrier getting hit with a missile. Anybody remember that from the book? I sure don't. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

nope, but a couple of subs do. Robby's carrier does launch a strike against some MiG's, but the MiG's get slaughtered....now that I think of it, I remember Robby saying something along the lines of "two with one missile...has to be a kill record". I think he may of placed that one on a Russian crusier or something...I'm not sure the Russians have AC's. _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Red October : Superb Film, some things different from book, but, all in all, main storyline holds true.
Patriot Games : Good film, as above, things are changed, but they are a bit more important now. Still, all in all, entertaining.
Clear and Present Danger : I saw the film before I read the book. Until I read the book I liked it better than Patriot Games, but after I read the book that changed.
-Way- too many changes. Ritter not coming to senses, Moira dying, no 'Zimmerman' I believe is the name of the gunner who dies, when Ryan promises to watch his family.
The Product of all Fears : I refuse to call this 'The Sum of All Fears', because to me, the main focus of Ryan's part in this novel was showing his 'bad side' The drinking, the temper, the bad relationship with the President, Cabot basically being a political hack instead of an intelligence officer, the trouble with Caroline. I thought this was the darkest of the 'Clancyverse' novels, and that is what I like about it. No happy ending, the President nearly nuking Russia and Iran, Ryan being a near-alchoholic, and Cathy not trusting him add up to what I thougt was the biggest test on Ryan yet.
