Well I finally got my copy of CIV 4 and as I've posted elsewhere on the board it would work, since I had the wrong version of DirectX 9.0 (9.0b instead of 9.0c) which wouldn't update, since I had a COPY of Windows XP Professional and not a GENUINE AUTHENTIC version of windows.
So after discovering this the hard way, I bought a brand spanking new copy of XP Home (that was all that the Navy Exchange had here in Yokosuka Japan) I updated windows. Well something happened to the Windows Installer after I got half way through installing all my programs and it would no longer install. So I formatted the drive (of course after I had all the important data, CIV III saves and scenarios and important documents backed up on my external HD).
I now had a nice clean fresh 160GB HD to install Windows XP on. Then sometime during the time it took me to get all the latest updates for Windows and update Norton Internet Security someone managed to plant 1 hijacker program on my computer and 1 or 2 other spy/adware programs. No mind you that the only website I went to was microsoft. Norton did its thing with its Live Update feature. After I had those working I installed Ghost Surf 2006 Platinum Edition with Spy Catcher. Ghost Surf with Spy Catcher is AWESOME. When it is working you can surf the internet completely anonymous and securely. Spy Catcher rules because it keeps anything form getting onto your computer, hijackers, key loggers etc... It was these two programs that caught the Hijacker that managed to cneak its way onto my PC before I could get them installed. But now my computer will not shut down properly and it won't let me do a few minor things.
I think I'm going to to try once more from scratch, but before I even get to the web to update anything including Windows, I'm gonna install Ghost Surf and jack up the security settings.
That is why I hate PEOPLE right now, especially those who htink it is fun to jack my stuff up before I can even get it working.

I know how you feel. Not long ago i got a computer worm which corrupts the Windows drivers. Didn't lose anything important but its a damn nuisance.
It could have been worse, one of my friends got one of those 'super hack bugs' that are going around. I have no idea how they work, but they have to be individually targeted (no email spreading) but they messed up his hard drive, wiped everything out. Essentially formatting his hard drive. Now considering he had 8 months worth of research for his Dissertation. Including research gathered from a £2500 field trip to the Andes. Now he's got about two months to redo the lot or practically flunk his degree.
Saying that, the University is compensating for it, giving him extra credit and the like. But its harsh losing a year of your own personal work. I go through the roof when i lose an Essay.
People who make viruses like that are the bane of the world. Something like that can be just as bad as a physical crime. Much more hurtful.
I saw this thing on a newsletter for university. Several programmers from different institutions are trying to design a virus protection program against that kind of thing. Which will basically send the effects of the virus back to the source. I have no idea if or how it would work. But i sure hope they can do it, id sure buy a copy.

I'd buy a copy of that too, and even buy stock too if it was available.
I thought I had it working, after running three or four different Anti-Spyware programs form Safe mode, they found quite a bit I might add. But when I went to shut down last night it actaed up again. I think this weekend I am going to start form scratch once more. Fortunately I still have my backup data, and I've only installed Office, ITunes and CIV 4.

Turn off system restore and run the anti-spyware...after they run delete whatever you find, restart, and then turn on system restore again.

Hope you sort it out soon mate, know how annoying it can be with a computer bug that wont shift.

Well everything seems ot be ok now.
Formatted my hardrive, to wipe it all out
Then I installed stalled a fresh copy of XP Home
Followed by installing Nortons Internet Securtiy 2005, and updating that
Next I installed Ghost Surf 2006 Platinum Edition with Spycatcher, and updated those.
Then I updated windows.
