One of the bars I hang around in sometimes has a restaurant attached to it....last night while a bunch of us were getting "primed" for our bowling night this guy comes in wearing USMC Blue Dress. I asked Kim (the bartender) who the guy was, and it turns out it was a kid that used to busboy over on the restaurant side, and that he'd just got back home after 14 months in Iraq. So I told Kim that I wanted to buy the guy a beer.

Turns out I couldn't, because he's only 19.

How the hell can someone get shot at overseas and then come home and not be able to have a beer?

Where's the logic in saying someone is responsible enough to defend our country but isn't responsible enough to have a beer?

Sounds totally messed up to me.

Couldn't agree with you more. Its like the attitude.

"Here Son, heres a multi billion dollar tank, jet, helo, sub. Have fun. But since your not old enough to drink, stay out of the bar!"

A year before I graduated a good friend of mine joined the navy. At 18 they were ready to give him a nuclear sub command after training.

But he couldn't drink.

About the most messed up thing I could think of.

(edited for spelling)

18 years, 19 years? At what age are you allowed to drink a beer there in the USA?

Propose a law to Congress. All U.S. Service men still enlisted and on active duty can when showing their military ID obtain Alcohol at the ages of 18 to 21.

I say if your brave enough to get shot at your good enough for a beer. Besides, I can imagine the thousands of idiots in the U.S. who would sign up tomorrow just so they could legally drink. There is the secrete for reinforcing enlistment numbers.

Guys the laws gotten changed back in the late 70s early 80s. Folks were getting tired of kids in high school drinking and some felt to many were becoming alcholoics. So they convinced their congress folks to make a change and a couple of crafy politians tied the drinking age issue into federal high way money to the states.

So it comes down this, states must have the age of legal drinking of alcholol at 21 or they lose fed money for the highways. Since no state wants to lose that money they will keep it at 21.

SO until enough folks see that it's not right to expect a service member to die for the nation and not trust them to be able to drink responiablely under the age of 21 then it's going to stay as it is.

So if you want to get pissed at some one then be pissed at the folks who thought they were helping out the future generations and doing the right thing.

FUBARed, very FUBARed.

However they did just change it so that anyone currently serving in the armed forces can carry a weapon without a permit... they should change this too. I agree, if a man or woman puts their life on the line for this country they should be able to drink whatever the frelling hell they want to!

The way my old man described them, a broom and a broom closet, respectively.

Wow, that's the first thing to make me laugh this week. Thanks!

I've never found sense in the legal drinking ages. 21 in the US, 19 in most of Canada (18 in Quebec), 16 in Germany. I really just don't get it.

I'm glad I'm now 21. I no longer have to care.

Just file this under the more things change.

30 years ago, the age of majority in the US was 21. You voted, smoke, drank, and signed contracts when you were 21.

After the Vietnam War, many people pointed out that it was stupid for an 18 year old to enlist, but not vote, smoke, drink or sign contracts (Gosh, how did we fight the Civil War when the enlistment age for the line was 16 and for the drum was 14?).

Anyway, long story short, the age of majority was lowered in most states to 18, (some are still higher), but not the drinking age because of the dangers of drunk drivers. Drivers start at 16, five years experience is considered when a person becomes a skilled driver. 16+5=21.

We had this fight 30 years ago, the forces of full-majority lost. As circumstances look about the same now as then, I'm not holding my breath that they'll win now. But don't let that stop you.

That just about sums it up. Though LTJGs can now be the XOs of IBUs or Inshore Boat Units. They cameo ut with that shortly after I took orders to a DDG as the DCA here in Japan.

But you know what is really messed up about all of this drinking age BS. It is this my friends:

If you are stationed overseas, you can abide by the local drinking age. Ex) here in Japan the Drinking age is 20, so if you are 20 you can drink no problems. If you are 18 or 19 you are still SOL, but you can get that first legal drink a year earlier. The crappy part is that when you go back State-side, and you are not 21, you can no longer drink.

In Germany you´re allowed to drink beer at an age of 16. At 18 years you´re an adult and allowed to drink what you want.
