This is something for a campaign I'm toying with.
*Local Diet*
Due to how mountanous the local terrain is, the staple grains are oats, corn, and potatoes; wheat, barley, and other grains cannot be grown to any extent as the little flat terrain there is is needed for the cities and the cattle. In addition, due to the distance from the ocean, seafood is also at a premium.
Now, if a player has the Administration skill they could theoretically make some quick $$$ by stocking up on seafood and/or wheat and selling it locally. Conversely, given the over-abundance of the grains this area does produce a player could sell some off-world for a large profit.
Thing is, would the average player be willing to do something like that, or would they just ignore it?
Thanks.

Depends...are they kind of players who have to fight no matter what?
Or do your players think more out side of the box and try to solve the issues instead of blasting them?

Most players I know wouldn't think of doing that unless it was presented by the GM. As an aside, the players units could be hired to escort a merchant who has had that idea.

I have to echo the others. It really depends on the players. But if they don't recognize the possibility, then they might not even think out it themselves. Giving them a small prompt (ie the escort the merchant idea) could trigger their imagination. But if they aren't the type to take on side quests like this then they might not want to do this. But if they are looking for other interesting RP possibilities and ways to make cash and off set the shortcoming of their contract, then I think they'd go for the idea if they know the possibility is there.

I would when appropriate but a lot of players wouldn't.

Do the characters have any merchant backgrounds or skills? Is one of them the veteran supply Sergeant who always has some extra equipment for his unit? Is there a con man among them? Are they opportunists?

Actually, I'm just doing this up as a general campaign. I don't have a party yet.
I'm stuck on campus for most of the day (not only am I taking classes I also work as a tutor), and so I have to do stuff like this to keep the boredom away.

Just write it down then. Having too much background for the setting is no worse a problem than having too little. You'll have more to pick and choose from so the characters (players?) stay interested.

Unless you have a player or character that is interested in doing that sort of thing, ie administration or merchant work, chances are that it is something they would not think of or even be interested in for the most part unless otherwise mentioned to them.
