Note to everyone who doesn't follow technology (like myself). Just because you currently have an AGP graphics card doesn't mean a new AGP graphics card will fit in the slot. I figured this out today.
As it turns out, my motherboard (which is probably 7 years old now) has an AGP 1x/2s slot. Good luck finding a card that fits that slot these days at a store. Probably have to order them online.
In any case, I'll be returning my 8x/4x card I bought today and will get a PCI version. My graphics card is as old as the motherboard, so I'm sure the PCI version will be faster than the old AGP 1x I've got now.
In case you're wondering, my card works fine (for the most part), but since it's a 3dfx Voodoo 3000 (remember them?), it's a little tough to find support.

PCI Express x16 is the way to go, but that would require a new board too. But it is fast . . .

Yeah, was reading a little about that as well. I actually think I'm just gonna stick with my current board and get a PCI card. I know it's potentially not as fast as AGP cards, but the only games I ever play are Civilization and Diablo, neither of which requires extensive graphic speeds. I think PCI will work ok for both of them. And if not, I'll just return the PCI card and stick with my current card until I get a new board.

Wow...my computer is only 5 years old and it feels like a dinosaur at times...
My wife's video card took a dump and her computer was a lot older...it was kind of funny when we where in Best Buy and asked for an even older card then they carry and the kid in their Geek Squad getting that blank confused look...
Luckyly the local pawn shop had some older computers and with a little haggling we managed to get her a new video card for $50, plus a spare one.

Which Civilization are your playing? Classic, 2 or 3? If you wanna give 4 a shot you might need a new card.
Edit: Here are the Requirements for CIV 4
Minimum System Requirements
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP
Processor: 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or
AMD Athlon processor or
equivalent
Memory: 256 MB RAM (Windows 2000) /
512 MB RAM (Windows XP)
Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB
video card with Hardware T&L
support ( GeForce 2/Radeon 7500
or better)
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound
card
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c
(included) or higher
Recommended System Requirements
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or
AMD Athlon processor or
equivalent
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
Video: 128 MB Video Card w/ DirectX 8
support (pixel & vertex shaders)
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound

Well, I got the card and it installed and worked fine (though it was a PCI card). Not as fast as AGP, but seems ok.
Also, I have a PII 500Mhz processor and the game works fine. Movies are a bit choppy, but I actually think that is a bug, and not a result of my processor. So, they say 1.2 Ghz, but mine runs with 500Mhz. Draw your own conclusions.

Never actually played multi-player Civ, but I'd be interested for sure. A friend of mine is going to help me build a new PC over the next couple of months. So I'll actually have a much better system down the road to play these games on.

I've never played Multiplayer CIV either, in fact I've jsut started my first game a PBEM over on evo-games.net, where I post as Steiner-Davion.
As for the new computer, I'll send you some links. I found some really great deals on TigerDirect.com and at Outpost.com
Combos (board and Processors) can be a great deal bu theydo not always come with CPU fans. But those usually are not too terribly expensive.

Any emails with links or help would be appreciated. It is my first PC from scratch, after all.

Thanks! I'll talk with my friend and we'll discuss all the alternatives. Looks like you can get a nice 3.2 Ghz Processor and good motherboard for just a few hundred dollars. So that's promising.

Japan is not quite as good as you think it should be. I ended up ordering my parts fomr the states, and paid about the same. I even got free priority shipping on most of it.

Also check out NewEgg. I'm building a 64bit machine for a friend using all newegg parts, and its only costing a hair over $500. Thats with a 3GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 120GB HD, and the following expansion slots: AGP 4x/8x, PCI Express 16x (2), and 4 standard PCI slots. Also has onboard SATA with RAID 0,1, onboard ATA, and some other stuff. Nice PC for only about $200 over an HP at Walmart (its about $620 with monitor).
