This one that I made a few years backand submitted on CBT (I had a different moniker then, before it went inactive when I went to sea a nuimber of times). I wanted something new for the Taurian Concordat to replace the J. Edgar, and be capable of numerous roles/missions.

I hope there are some out there that might like it.

Overview:

In early 3056, shortly after his proclamations increasing battlemech production and renewed military spending, Protector Jeffery Calderon requested the development of a new light hover tank. Design goals for the new craft were high maneuverability, ease of repair, survivability, crew comfort and the ability to undertake a variety of missions. Using the J. Edgar as a basis the design team was able to drastically reduce the research and development time; consequently the new craft began production in just under 13 months, the first one moving off the assembly line under its own power in February 3057, breaking all production records in the Periphery to date.

Capabilities:

The Hailstorm was one of three designs submitted for review to the Ministry of Defense for consideration. Other designs submitted possessed greater armor, cargo capability, or firepower but lacked the ground speed and exceptional maneuverability that the Hailstorm displayed. Utilizing a standard fusion engine the Hailstorm is capable of speeds in excess of 160 kph, and can deploy a standard Taurian Infantry Squad of ten men faster than other designs currently produced; this easily met the Protectors goal of being one of the quickest designs fielded in its weight class. Four tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor provide better than average protection for its class, and equipped with CASE crew survivability is significantly increased.
Utilizing a Delta Dart LRM-5 missile launcher provides the Hailstorm with the ability to attack enemies at long range while traveling at high speeds proving an exceptionally difficult target. Secondary weaponry is a pair of Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers, providing significant close in hitting power for low weight and heat; these two weapons could easily be upgraded to extended range versions when the Concordat obtains the technology to produce them. Infantry support and defense is provided by two tried and true Sperry-Browning Machine guns with a half-ton of ammunition shared between them.
After highly successful acceptance and field-testing, observed by the Protector and the Privy Council, the Ministry of Defense approved the design and ordered 300 units, with the option for an additional 700 awaiting approval pending successful actual combat data.

Deployment:

Current plans are for lances of three Hailstorms and two Maultier Hover APC’s and one Fulcrum Heavy Hover tank to deploy an entire infantry company to highly critical combat zones, or act as rapid insertion team for Special Forces. The first production run was rapidly distributed to the VI Corps, with the second run currently underway and filling places in the Taurian Guard. The third and fourth runs are slated for the IV Corp and III Corp respectively. The VI Corp is expected to make extensive use of the Hailstorm against pirate raiders on our newer colonies near the Pirate’s Haven Star Cluster. When received by the IV Corp it is expected that the Hailstorm will provide a significant surprise for Davion Forces conducting raids into the Concordat. Orders are being received from the Magistracy of Canopus, and worlds in the New Colony Region from supporting forces to the Colonial Marshals. Whether the Hailstorms speed and striking power will tip the balance in the favor of the Marshal’s from the hands of the pirates conducting raids there remains to be seen, as these raiders appear to be relatively well equipped for mere pirates.

Variants:

Only one variant has been seen thus far, the HST-1MS, which replaces the LRM-5 with an SRM-4. This increases the short-range striking power of the craft at the expense of any long-range capability. Technical manuals contain detailed instructions for field modification to this configuration using data for the most common model of SRM launchers currently in production, demonstrating designers concerns for greater short-range firepower. Proponents for a more dedicated scouting model, the HST-1MA, have recommended removing the forward firing Medium Laser and replacing it with a TAG laser, and replacing the machine guns and ammo with a Beagle Active Probe. This modification has yet to make it off of the drawing board, and opponents state the lack of Arrow IV missiles or semi-guided LRM’s make using TAG a low priority.

A c-bill for your thoughts?

DON´T REPLACE THE EDGAR!!!!
I´ve never had so much fun playing with hovers than with a lance of Eddies!
Supplement them but don´t replace them!
J. Edgar is cult!
(You are right! I´m obsessed with them!!!)

PS: Your hover isn´t bad!!!

This is a good tank. However, I will state that I prefer the modification with the SRM to the LRM variant. This is a personal preference though, not a critique. I use tanks as shock troops, which aren't meant to survive but are meant to inflict decent damage against a mech before dying. So I like fast things that get close and shoot everything off before dying one turn later.

That said, your modification for the scout should have the Beagle Active Probe, but I love ECM as well, and infantry. So what I see is this:

1) Remove machine guns, LRMs, ammo, and CASE (+ 5 tons)
2) Add Beagle Active Probe and ECM Suite (- 3 tons)
3) Two tons more for infantry!

The basic design is solid. Definitly meant to compete with the J. Edgar (which, to be honest, I've never actually used, so I'm basing this off of stats comparison). SRM variant rocks my world and I will use at some point. And I like the debate over the scout variant.

Oh yes. Why do I like that debate? BECAUSE THERE WAS FLUFF! OMG! FLUFF! SOMEONE WROTE FLUFF! Smile Sorry. I'm done now.

Thoughts? Commentary?

Raven,

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

FLUFF!?! YOU LIKED THE FLUFF?!?

I didn't expect that.

You have no idea how long it took me to write that. I must have revised it ...hell, I can't even remember how many times.

I didn't think it was going to interest anyone. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. More lame-o stuf,f written by someone hoping to make a name for themselves, and not having a clue how to write even a fractured sentence." Now wait a minute there!.... I most certainly can write fractured sentences! They are the only thing I can write! So don't try and take that away from me!

Ok, now that I have suppressed my evil alter ego...

You liked the fluff?

No. Sorry, can't agree with that one. Removing the equipment and weapons that you did only to add an ECM, BAP , and 2 more tons of cargo/infantry space takes away from the concept of the design. "...the ability to undertake a variety (not mastering or performing perfectly) of missions." Remember???

You leave only 2 medium lasers, ECM, BAP, and 3 tons of cargo. Now while 3 tons of cargo is great, allowing one to move an entire platoon of infantry, it wasn't what I wanted when I wrote this.

I wrote the SRM material in the fluff because I like designs that can close and deliver a punch and get away again and that fit the bill perfectly.

The MG's are there to take care of infantry when depoying the squad since the LRM would be useless in close and they can take down a normal squad or platoon in relatively short order. I even considered a flamer briefly for that role, but if I remember correctly it takes up an entire ton (vehicle variety flamer)which was more than I wanted to commit.

I even gave you a scouting variety with BAP to start with. I figured that the BAP was more important for a vehicle that could be placed in a scouting lance than an ECM. I prefer ECM's over BAP's as the Beagle has little to no effect on normal game play, and the ECM messes up all of the other forms of electronics.

But...I am really glad that you liked it.

I would love to be designing stuff for and molding the Calderon Protectorate. I think that it would be great to be a part of the design team for my 2 favorite periphery nations. And CLAN WOLVERINE!

again...Glad you liked it.

Oh no. you not gonna have an easy time here if you don't include fluff with a design. Without fluff, a design is simply numbers. It has no life and no soul.

So we like fluff around here, it turns a good design into a great design or a horrible design into a enjoyable laughing session.

No, I love fluff. It gives a machine soul. I love crappy machines with good fluff cause they are more realistic.

As to my modification. The idea was simply a variant that was a fast infantry transporter. it would be cheap to make and profits from the sales could support the other designs. I always say "Get as much as you can from as little as possible."

That was the idea!

Raven,

Only have a minute. Can't respond to submissions while at work, can see them but network won't take my submissions for some reason. Saw your entry yesterday will get back to you all tonight

Icer,

Enyo? Isn't that a clan design? I would bet against an even match if that is so. I don't remember the data for the enyo at all.
