Tierney’s Raiders

The Raiders are an experienced, company-sized semi-independent unit which specializes in reconnaissance, raiding, and guerrilla warfare. Their commander, Johan Tierney, is an expat of the Capellan Confederation with prior service in the Death Commandos. Needless to say, he managed to offend somebody very important to have been expelled from the Death Commandos, and very resourceful, to have survived. Although the Maskirovska has not dedicated resources specifically to assassinating him or bringing him in, he remains a target of opportunity and has a bounty of $500,000 c-bills on his head for good measure, even almost forty years after he defected!. For this reason, he does all of his business on planets like Outreach or Solaris through hired agents.

For some unknown reason, Captain Tierney is a collector of old Oakland Raiders’ paraphernalia, and uses their logo as his unit’s insignia. He can usually be found wearing the Silver and Black jersey when he is out of his ‘mech’s cockpit, and has an extensive collection of originals (although he never wears these).

Lineup:

Black Lance

Captain Johan Tierney (Gunnery, 2, Piloting, 2): WVR-6R Wolverine

XO Sandra Cho (Gunnery 3, Piloting 4): GRF-1N Griffin
Sandra Cho is a native of the Draconis Combine who choose to pursue a mercenaries life in order to escape the straight-jacket of the Combine’s class system. Her father was a warrior in the Legion of Vega, who was originally a tanker but managed to claim an overheating Griffin. The Griffin was not in very good shape, but it ran (kind of), and Sandra developed a strong set of technical skills working on the ‘mech before her father retired. Her Griffin still overheats, particularly in hot climates or in a prolonged battle, but Sandra’s strong technical skills, tactical ability, and iron personality, born of over thirty years in the mercenary trade, make her an ideal XO despite her ‘mech’s difficulties.

Sergeant Mark Miles (Gunnery 1, Piloting 3): DRG-1C Dragon
Sergeant Miles is also an expat of the Draconis Combine who was forced to leave the Combine after he killed his commanding officer in a drunken brawl. Like Johan Tierney, he is a resourceful survivor who has fought and weaseled his way out of more tight spots that he has a right to have survived. In battle, he is a superb sniper, capable of hitting targets at long range while his ‘mech is at a full run.

Sergeant William “Blackjack” Connors (Gunnery 4, Piloting 1): OTT-7J Ostscout

Sergeant Connors, or “Blackjack” as he is known for the Blackjack School of Combat jacket he always sports, is a consummate professional who serves with Tierney’s Raiders when he could serve with many more prestigious units because he believes the Raiders are the best at what they do. His old Blackjack school contacts come in useful occasionally; he was even able to score some almost impossible to locate replacement parts for his Ostscout’s sensor suite on one occasion. Not that the ‘mech’s sensors were damaged. Blackjack is an incredibly cautious scout who rarely, if ever, uses his ‘mech’s weapons system in combat…although he has set some woods on fire to cover his retreat on occasion.

Silver Lance

Lieutenant Olga Petronivitch (Gunnery 2, Piloting 3): FS9-M Firestarter “Mirage”

Olga Petronivitch has been with Tierney’s Raiders from the beginning, over thirty years ago. She could have had the XO job if she liked, but prefers to run her own Lance. Seriously wounded in combat against the 1st Regulan Hussars fifteen years ago, Olga only has one of her original limbs, but learned to use the replacements so well that she is today a better pilot than she was the day a swarm of LRMs struck her cockpit and nearly killed her. Despite her close brush with death, she remains affable, and is particularly valuable as an instructor who understands the finer points of mobile warfare.

Corporal Jin Keller (Gunnery 4, Piloting 4): Commando COM-4F (custom)

Corporal Keller is the newest combat certified member of Tierney’s Raiders. Although he is younger and less seasoned than Captain Tierney would prefer, he was the only mechwarrior apprentice in the unit ready for duty when his predecessor was killed in battle. His ‘mech is a rare version of the Commando, outfitted with LRMs for providing fire-support to a fast-moving lance. As the only dedicated LRM platform in the company, Corporal Keller is often tasked with laying smoke rounds to cover assaults, raids, and extractions. Although this leaves him virtually defenseless as his LRM bins are not carrying “live” ammunition, Jin has handled himself well in combat so far and shows exceptional promise, if he can survive.

Sergeant Judy Lench (Gunnery 3, Piloting 3) HER-2S Hermes II

Judy has been with the Raiders for ten years, and during this time has evolved from a greenhorn apprentice into a battle-hardened veteran of many battles and skirmishes. Originally from the Lothian League, Sergeant Lench today has no home other than the Raiders, and in intensely loyal to them. In combat she can play any role her ‘mech is capable of, and her assignments have ranged from fire support to flushing out urban defenders with her flamer. During raids, she habitually torches anything she cannot carry off.

Sergeant Vijay Sharna (Gunnery 2, Piloting 2) WSP-1W Wasp

One of the few pilots to ever capture a Wolf’s Dragoons model Wasp intact, Vijay Sharna is one of the most experienced pilots ever to pilot a twenty-ton ‘mech. He is good at getting behind enemy ‘mechs and cutting them to pieces with the small lasers, although he has had a few close calls. Fortunately, Wasp parts are cheap and easy to come by.

Gold Lance

Lieutenant Greg Ulricher (Gunnery 2, Piloting 3): OTL-4F Ostsol

The sole member of the Raiders to hail from Davion space, Lieutenant Ulricher is an alumnus of the Albion Military Academy and was a lance commander in the Davion Guards before getting being drummed out of the military for being peripherally involved in a parts hoarding scheme. He managed to avoid prison by leaving the Federated Suns before his court-martial, although he has since been pardoned, as one of the conditions the Federated Suns agreed to when they wanted to hire the Raiders.

In addition to his duties as a lance commander, Greg also serves as the unit’s business representative when necessary. His noble birth and the bearing instilled by his time at the Albion military academy is often invaluable during negotiations.

His Ostsol is the closest thing the company has to a heavy bruiser, and so Lieutenant Ulricher often turns his paired PPCs to the toughest nut in the enemy line.

Sergeant Sandra Black (Gunnery 4, Piloting 4): PHX-1 Phoenix Hawk

The other “rookie” of the Raiders, Sandra inherited her father’s ‘mech when he retired from the Raiders two years ago. Although she is a competent ‘mechwarrior who has seen some heavy action (in particular a botched drop that sent here into the teeth of enemy fighters, and left her with the task of getting her heavily damaged ‘mech back to friendly forces), her overall level of experience remains far below the veteran and elite level the Raiders try to maintain.

Sergeant Lilien Chen (Gunnery 3, Piloting 4): VL-2T Vulcan

Sergeant Chen and her Vulcan take point in the city. Originally from the Taurian Concordat, she has been with the Raiders for fifteen years, and is able to smell an ambush better than almost anyone.

Sergeant Ibrahim Hussein (Gunnery 2, Piloting 3) JR7-D Jenner

Sergeant Hussein was formerly a member of the Arkab legions, but disliked belonging to a unit regarded as expendable by the DCMS. In the Raiders, he knows that mercenaries are often seen as expendable by employers, but he also realized that Captain Tierney is not going to take his unit being expended lightly!

What are you building anyway?

I was thinking of adding a couple more companies to this mix. Maybe a city-assault/garrison company and a line medium company.

No; The short people from Oz live elsewhere ChiHawk.

I am seeking to go further into the Periphery Between the Outworlds Alliance, and Clan space, out from DC MS space.

I didn't insinuate anything...I came right out and said it.

Your proposed force is larger than many canon units, and of course you'll have no real way to pay for it (nor be able to acquire that much stuff) without doing something that would effect the canon universe.

You presume much. As for my Units Financial state, not all is as it seems; just because my unit is mercenary (scum to you), does not mean that they are not also suppliers of sorts. You presume to religate the Steel Scorpions in the same niché as Hanson's Roughriders, or the Waco Rangers... they are not.
The units affect on the "cannon" campaign universe is simple, we are Backed by the Fuel of war... House Kurita; more specificly ammo, and Armor, of which Copra III produces a modest amount of.
I took careful notes on the game, and its workings... everyone uses AC's and Gauss... where, do you suppose they get that ammo? The great Houses (not just Kuirta, but FC too) buy from alot of sources, and since ComStar regulates most Trade Weights and Measures in the BT universe, Standardized Ammo Sizes are not unfeasable.

Add up the costs just to have your unit do nothing for a month. No battles, no training.....nothing. How do you pay the people in your unit?

And where did all your mechs come from? And the assets to move those mechs? And the people required to support those mechs? heck, where'd all those pilots come from?

And as for presuming, I didn't call mercs scum...mercs are important in the universe. I just laugh at how munchkin people get when creating units.
