Just an odd passing thought that goes through my mind from time to time. Why in the Battletech Universe, with the galaxies of planets are humans the only species?

"Galaxies with planets"? What books have you been reading? The whole Inner Sphere is just a tiny fraction of our galaxy. A few thousand settled worlds, most of them within 300 lightyears from Terra. How surprising is it that no aliens have been sighted?
Well, there was aliens in one of the novels, but let's not mention that.

It would be interesting non the less to have Aliens to fight out with instead of other BattleMechs.

Realisticly; It takes over 3 months to recieve radio telemetry from our unmanned probes and they are only about half way out of the solar system. Furthest one, will have Pluto in its range within the next few years, and will take almost 6 months for us to recieve those radio broadcasts.
Now Imagine this; you are traveling at the cusp of the speed of light... it would take you nearly 11,200 YEARS to reach a neighboring solar system. KF Jump drive funtion on the premise that there ARE viable solar systems within 30 light years of Terra, which in Real World physics is unlikely, but possable.
Ok lets go on the Basis that there Are indeed cultivatable worlds as the BT universe sees it.. for the conditions to be Met that "Alien" species advanced enough to make space flight would be encountered, I would imagine their technology would be rather wicked in its genisis; bizzare even.
Humans use about 12-20% of our cerebral capacity; we would be primitive and very simple to a species that uses, lets say, 22-35% of their cerebral capacity.
If the BT universe funtions on technology that is literaly thousands of years old, out of chance; Aliens that don't have the perpensity of warlike behavior wouldn't have been so restricted. I would dread to imagine the vast difference of Technology.

Actually I like the CBT universe because there are no aliens. When I want non humans around I play Star Wars or something.
And to brain capacity, roach using 100% of brain capacity will probably remain where evolution placed it now, size matters too

Basically the next star is about 3.5 lightyears away (and so flying at the cusp of the speed of light will get you there in aproximatly 3.5 years).
Shure: BT history/physics assume that a lot of stars have earth like planets. Planets that we now have great problems to find (most extra-solar planets that were found till now are giants much bigger than jupiter).
But by the way: an aggressive alien race will change the IS in a much greater way than the clans had done!
So if you introduce some aliens threatening the IS you will expect a mostly united mankind not much thereafter!
And so combat mech against mech will get scarce and i don´t know if we really want that!

What about Alien influences in combat. Such as Zurg, Alien from the Alien films, or Starship Troopers bugs....anyhow...I actually think it would make things a little interesting.

I think if a party meets some semi-intelligent bugs with a hard shell and some armor-ripping teeth/acid/what else on an uncharted world/forgotten spacestation it will be fun and no real danger to BT-history!!

You should try my missile rules variation, it requires some alterations on units, which are all minor, but gives missiles a big oomf.
Remove all Ammo and use the following conversions:
SRM- 2 heat/missile, 10 dmg/missile, min 0, 3/6/9
LRM- 2 heat/missile, 5 dmg/missile, min 6, 7/14/21
Each launcher now gets a # of missiles equal to its size. [ex: SRM 6 get 6 missiles.] You choose how many missiles are fired per volley and roll a to-hit for each volley. An entire volley either hits or misses. You may fire as many volleys as you have missiles. Damage location is rolled on a per missile bases. AMS still shoots down the same number of missiles as rolled up to the # in a volley.
Enjoy.

This depends on the strength of the alien species. Maybe there will be some sort of unity that emerges at first, but things will settle down soon enough. This is what happened with the clans. By 3060 the DC and the FS are already eyeing one another again, and it took even less time for the Cappies and the Fedrats to start going at it again.

Elementals are basically mobile infantry (although in the Heinlein book they carried nukes). That could be fun

Actually there are quite a few dangerous species. Overgrown animals, six legged lizards, insects...
To infest a Drop ship you don't need intelligence. Just instinct that makes you comfortable in tight spaces and a short while when the security doesn't pay attention.
