==Overview:==
Weighing in at 3,500 tons, the Union Class DropShip is the standard
medium DropShip throughout the Successor States, small enough to easily
transport a 'Mech raiding party and large enough to support part of.a
full-scale invasion.
==Capabilities:==
The Union can carry a full company of twelve 'Mechs, plus two aerospace
fighters. A single Union Class DropShip is often associated with a specific
company; for example, the Union DropShip Sweet Chariot is exclusively assigned
to transport Sinclair's Company of the St. Ives Armored Cavalry.
While the Union is an impressive vessel, it is not without it weaknesses:
Spartan accommodations, chronic system failures, small cargo and spare
capacity, and a complex engine and thruster system. These weaknesses have
caused the death of many vessels and their crews or the straw that broke the
back of down on his luck captain or mercenary unit. This is why in 3033 after
the first releases of data from the Helm Library Core, Deller, Bingham, &
Fouts (DBF) on Atreus announced that it was expanding its shipyard for the
immediately refit of Union Class Dropships. This refit quickly became called
the "Jove Refit" and was specifically tailored for mercenaries and free lance
captains.
The first and most major modification performed by DBF was the virtual
gutting and reorganization of the ships insides. The DBF design team began
the refit by calling for a major redesigning the engine and thruster systems
from the exhaust port up. Using the less complicated systems found on the
Gazelle and Monarch Dropships as a base the refits engine and thruster system
is moderately less complicated and more durable then the original system. In
addition, the refit team also reduced capacity of the refits fuel tanks as
part of the engine refit in order to further reduce the systems size and mass.
Next, the refit team reorganized the vessels massive cargo bays to reduce
vulnerability to combat damage, expedite the loading and unloading process,
and to create further space for additional accommodations.
And to finish the internal refit, the crew accommodations were heavily
altered. Because so much space used to be taken up by engines and cargo bays,
the crew's quarters were spartan. The fourteen crewmen and twelve to fourteen
MechWarriors and fighter pilots were forced to cram themselves into tiny
bunkrooms with neither view ports nor recreational facilities. In addition,
sanitary facilities were extremely limited, and the air recirculation system
was small, unsophisticated, and prone to failures. With the redesign of the
engines and cargo bays, the "Jove Refit" redesigns the entire crew deck, adds
a second level, and increases the crew size to nineteen. Furthermore, no
longer is the crew crammed into a single room as they now occupy several
multi-bunk quarters, and the 'mechwarriors, aerofighter pilots, and their
technicians now occupy quarters on the new level, and the ship has been
equipped with an all new sanitation facility and air recirculation system.
The second and less technical of the refits was to the Union's impressive
weapons array. Instead of the six Class 5 autocannons, twelve medium lasers,
five heavy lasers, three PPCs, and six 20 rack LRM launchers, DBF modified and
optimized the weapon and coolant systems to replace many of the ammunition
based weapons with smaller versions or energy weapons. This resulted in the
"Jove Refit" carrying nine heavy lasers, twelve medium lasers, and six 15 rack
LRM launchers, which is nearly equivalent to the firepower of the original
weapons package but with the ability to fire more weapons more often.
While all these refits are expensive and bring with them their own
weaknesses such as no longer being able to use conventional spare parts, they
increases the vessels durability and efficiency. And these things make an
already fearsome vessel into a truly terrifying one.
