OK, here's the setup:

You're leading a lance of mechs (4) to chase down an element (2) of mechs.

A battle has just ended, but your lance wasn't involved and the element your chasing escaped without engaging your main force.

The element you're chasing is a pair of Battlemasters-1D, armed with a PPC and a lot of lasers. BV is 2646. They retreat into a city. (If you have megamek, it's a 2x2 map, Military Base 1, City Downtown, Skyscrapers, and Residential.)

What four mechs do you bring after them? How many can you bring back?

(set as a reply so people can reply separately to either my solution or to my set-up)

My Solution: 2 Assassin ASN-21s, an Enforcer -4R, and a Vulcan 2T, combined BV 2610.

I jumped a lot and stayed on top of buildings. I tried to stay at range from the battlemasters unless I could jump in behind them. I kept my mechs far apart from each other, but with the Battlemasters always between two mechs.

I lost both Assassins, my Enforcer was disabled, and the Vulcan needed an overhaul later.

Two BMs? In a city? If there's a choice I'll go after them with four King Crabs. I expect to bring all KCs back.

Requiring a full lance to chase the Battlemasters puts the pursuer at too much of a disadvantage, IMO. The 2.6K BV limit forces the pursuer to choose from small, woefully outmatched 'mechs to fight twin giants in terrain that's most advantageous to their design.

As you state, the Battlemasters CAN be taken down, but no sane military commander would willingly pit his men (and more importantly, his 'mechs) into that kind of lose-lose fight.

Check the mission brief again. There's no limit other than you have to pick four mechs.

Yes. What I'm really interested in is, as a commander, what would you bring, or as a gamer, what could you bring.

A pair of Battlemaster elements pounding each other is fairly straight forward.

Four on two, though, is a little different.

I've beaten it easily bringing a four of heavies, just so long as they could reach 5/8.

But such an outlandish mismatch (it was something like 5100 to 2600 BV and I had almost twice the weight) seems unsporting from the gamer's perspective.

That's what gave me the impression the BV was capped.

A WVR-6R Wolverine and a GRF-1N Griffin backed up by HBK-4G Hunchbacks would be my pick for an interesting and hard-fought game.

As a commander, however, I would choose a VTR-9B Victor, twin HGN-733 Highlanders, and a KGC-0000 King Crab.

As a Commander, my choice is a Texas battleship.

Not looking up BV and Looking for what would be fun. I have 2 ideas.

Kurita Lance- Manuver combat
Dragon
Wolverine K
Jenner
Jenner

Liao Lance- Indirect combat
Catapult
Vindicator
Crusader-L
Assassin

Both would be challenges and fun.

AWAD- Or hordes of infantry if using Max Tech rules and these are the BattleMasters with no MGs
