Which would you rather have for use against battle armor: an ER Medium Laser or two Small Lasers?
I'm trying to customize a canon hovertank for use against battle armor, and I've run into a snag. Unless I choose to add more heat sinks (which I really don't have the tonnage for), I've got 1 ton to play with and 5 points of heat that can still be vented.

The ER Medium, of course. You don't want to be in range of the BAs' weapons if you can help it.

What other weapons does the tank already have? How fast is it?

I'm basing it off of the J. Edgar.
I dropped it down to 10 / 15 speed. For additional defense, I gave it Ferro Fiberous armor and an ECM unit mounted in the body. I traded out the medium laser for an ER medium, and I've dropped one of the SRM 2 racks.
The problem rests with that dropped SRM 2 rack. Here's what I'm looking at as far as options go:
1. Use the tonnage from the dropped SRM 2 rack for a second ER Medium Laser. This would give me additional range.
2. Plug the missile tubes with small lasers. I'd lose range, but I'd gain two weapons.
3. Upgrade the remaining SRM launcher to a Streak, and then use the extra half-ton for an ER Small Laser.

What is the possible benefit to two SmaLas?
The SL is usually something I stick on as an, "oh, I've still got a half-ton and no more armor left..."
With a full ton, and unless there are some heat issues, I'd put the MedLas in without thinking too much more about it. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

I'd tend to agree with Sabredance here. With theadditonal deal clincher that you do not want to be close to BA as a vehicle.
THe streak is not a bad idea either though, because of its versitility. The only problem there is the amount of ammo you would be carrying over the course of the battle/engagement. Chances are you will never use it all since it is a STREAK, so if BA do get close and attach themselves, you are so SOL...

Pah! It's not like the ammo will kill you any more than being ripped to pieces by BA already does.
The only thing lacking is rules for damaging enemy units with your ammo explosion.

ER Medium, no other real choice. More range, helps in all cases.
What would be real fun is a AMS that worked against Battle Armor. Then you go in with the 2 SL and give them a nasty surprise.
But in the end, artillery, affects all elements in a hex. Use it as direct fire with your own TAG. Not cheap, but unethical and effective.

ER med. The range advantage outweighs the additional 1 point of damage easily.
