You only need 1 to play, and the rules contained in that one now cover EVERY aspect of the universe. (Mechs, AeroSpace, Dropships/Jumpships, Vehicls, Battle Armow, etc). So the fact that all these different rules have been condensed to one book means that's fewer books to buy.
The other books are supplemental books. I think one is suppose to deal with designing your own custom mechs, vehicles, etc. That's a nice one to have. I bet the others are mostly fluff stuff and could be done without. Somewhere on CBT all the books are listed with a brief description of what they are. I'm sure one of my regulars could find it and post it here for us.

Did you notice what they did with AMS?
Automatic -4 on the missile hits table (not missiles, the actual base dice roll), and it only expends one shot of ammunition. Granted IS AMS always sucked, but this goes a bit too far in the opposite direction.
They still havn't fixed pulse lasers though

Yeah I got that and made a post about it somewhere else.
But yes, could someone find all the books? The CBT site really confuses me. It is no where near as clean as Mordel's is.

You people must think I'm made out of money!!!
I plan on having more things available for purchase from the Store when the new site rolls around. Maybe not initially, but I will add them over time.

Yes, there will be 5 books. There has been a lot of changes. Total Warfare is the tournament rules. All rules necessary for playing tournaments are in that book. The Tech Manual will have the rules for construction. Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 are history. It is now either Tournament or Advanced. And the biggest change is in the infantry section. Read those rules carefully, as they are almost completely different. Vehicles are now more survivable, but the BattleMech is still king. Some of the new weapons are just nasty.

As I said. Hunt well. I just don't have enough interest to refigure it out.

I think I agree with Pin on this one. I just dont have enough time or money to spend on yet more books.

I think the new book set is geared towards new players and players of the wizkids generation. I'm not sure they wanted to try to draw the older crowds who fell in love with the CBT worlds. They have already angered many with the past changes in both the game and especially the storyline.

This is the first major revision of the rules in the history of the game.
I think many are overreacting just a touch.

Chihawk,
Nope not over-reacting, as I barely know the rules as they stand any more. I learned to play the game by playing against a friend who happens to be one of the best players I've ever come across. We did alot of looking at the rules, and over time got to the point where we both knew them like a good book. That is how I won so many of the King of the Hill battles you used to hold.
I could start playing this new game, and not really care much about the rules, but then I get stuck in the situation where I can lose because someone brought out something that is allowable that I didn't know about, and I don't like that much.
So my choice is to buy a bunch of new books, and learn enough to play this game mediocrely, or don't buy the books, and don't play.
Since I truly believe that Cons should be run with the released rules, maybe I'll watch a game at TotalCon, but right now I'm doubting it.

From what I recall, several of the rules were updated or made to address areas that many fans had long considered flawed (i.e. AMS systems)...
Change isn't always bad...

Most of the changes to the rules concerning 'Mechs are because of inconsistencies in the previous rules. The powers that be in FanPro payed attention, and revised the rules to fix those problems. While they were at it they chose to fix other items that were also problems.
For instance: Under the old rules a 'Mech that had lost a leg had to make two rolls to stand up. One to actually stand, one for running while missing a hip. Now only one roll is required, because the attempt now falls under the minimum movement rules. _________________ Incoming fire has the right of way.
