Last year, I purchased a DVD boxed set of a TV series I enjoy.
Due to various matters, I've only recently been able to sit down and watch some of the episodes. To my chagrin, I've noted what appears to be a defect on one of the disks: if I use the "episode select" option to skip ahead to a particular episode, then the first two minutes' worth of footage gets shaved off. The opening credits and episode title card play normally, but it skips ahead as if the two minutes' footage was never even there.
It's possible that if I play the previous episode through, I'll get a version of this episode with all of the footage. But either way, I'm looking at a defective disk.
Problem is, due to how long ago I purchased this set I no longer have my receipt. Even if I did, it's past the time limit set by the store of purchase for defective merchandise returns.
Given this, should I attempt to contact the manufacturer directly concerning the set in question and ask for a replacement disk?
Thanks.

An e-mail is free, a letter very cheap.

And, depending on the store... they may let you do an exchange with no receipt. I've done it before at Walmart and Target both. Neither asked WHEN I purchased it. And they don't really care anyways because they get credit from the manufacturer for it anyways. So thats what I would do, just exchange it somewhere and be done with it... IF the manufacturer says they wont replace the disc.

How did you pay for the DVD set? If you used a card, and go back to the same store and they can probably verify when you bought it to the hour, minute and second. They may actually replace it too.

Try it on another DVD player, or try it cold, or after another DVD.
Over the years I've had DVD's that randomly don't like a type of DVD. I've had DVDs that normally work on a DVD player start acting up randomly. Other DVDs work fine after the machines have warmed up. They're just finicky.
This is particularly true of "cheep" serieses.
Earth 2 and Knight Rider act up most frequently. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

ralgith is correct. Provided you are either exchanging or swapping, you can do it at Target with no receipt. If they still have the disc-set on the shelves, you should be able to just do a straight up swap with no problems.

I've only got Lost Season 1 (will buy Season 2 soon) and Family Guy on DVD. I've wanted plenty of others, but the significant other has nixed those purchases.
I REALLY wanted the boxed set(s) for Greatest American Hero. I'll probably still buy them if I see them again. Loved that show!!

Strictly speaking, my brother has Earth 2, my dad has Knight Rider, and I have Battlestar Galactica (the original).
All three good, old shows.
And Greatest American Hero rocked. I wish I could've bought it when I saw it, just didn't have the money. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."
