Okay without bring in WoB as their source, could pirates in the BT universe get and keep a warship? I think the corvette size or frigate size vessels would be about all they could capture or steal.
Now to add the WoB angle for those who like the current storyline and it's cheese. What happens to the WoB navy once they are beat?

I doubt pirates could capture a warship, and I doubt they could maintain it, but that isn't the only way to get a warship.
I would consider a house "giving" a pirate band a warship to harass their enemies borders. This would also allow the ship to be maintained by a house.
Or do a Star Wars. When the MF escapes from the Death Star, Pincess Leia comments: "They let us go." That way the pirates wouldn't have to know, and a hand behind the scenes could help them indiirectly in their plundering, but could also be a manipulartor as well.
A Pirate band with a ship could do an awesome amount of damaged. It could go into business stealing dropships in orbit. What dropship wouldn't surrender under the guns of a Warship. They could be rich beyond the dream of avarice. Ultimately, they could become a big problem, requiring a big and bloddy solution.
Sounds like great fun

The right amount of hostages could potentially keep a larger warship working for pirates, but I'm not quite convinced. Repairs and supplies cost a lot and the specialist gear isn't available everywhere.
More likely that a regular navy ship engages in some unlicensed piracy when an opportunity comes. If the captain and some key personnel are corrupt they could pull it off without the crew even realizing it. Order a merchant to stop, have your corrupt marine detachment transfer cargo and then tell the corrupt weapons officer to destroy the victims. Next time you dock your corrupt cargo master sells the loot to the corrupt commander of Space Station Alpha.
The WoB angle, and what happened to their navy? Some undoubtedly decided to just get out and do their own thing, including piracy. But they have the same problems as anyone else with support, AND they used to be Wobblies!

As a thought for pirates and warships, what about a Letter of Marque from one of the houses?
Just so everyone knows, a letter of Marque was historically given to a ship by a noble, essentially making the ship a 'legal' pirate. The ship and crew was given mostly free reign to raid targets considered hostile by the nobility. Say, for example, a 'brittish' privateer would be allowed to attack and plunder french and spanish ships.
As long as the privateer paid a tithe or fee to the nobiblity, and kept their hands off certain vessels, they were allowed to pretty much do as they please.
A possiblity would be for a House to grant a Letter of Marque to an independent vessel, say a small jumpship with a few guns on it, as well as some dropships. Everything runs smoothly for a few months. Then, when the House rep shows up to collect the House's due, the pirvateers space him, and go off on their own.
A similar occurence took place during one of the Succession wars. House Kurita was paying a pirate band to raid worlds on the Steiner border. Whether or not Stiener was paying the same band to raid Kurita escapes me at the moment. Eventually, the pirates became too good at their job, and the DCMS was sent in to eliminate the 'friendly' pirates.

They could, in theory, find a abandoned one, spend time and money to repair it, and go on a rampage.
I just don't see it.

Imagine a band of pirates capturing a modern day USN Missile Cruiser! I don't think they are able to operate more than the basic systems or to repair it when damaged!
Better take an armed jumpship with two or three dropships.

Wasn't there a story in MECH magazine years ago about a band of pirates trying to take a Clan warship? THis badn of pirates actually had a hidden dock and a jumpship or two if I remember the beginings of the story. Was with what is her name, Ryan something, with the one eye. Somebody help me out here, I know I am not making it up. Memory is just a bit foggy atm. _________________ one by one the rabbits are stealing my sanity....

You forgot an angle here. What about privateers?
I think in and of themselves it'd be interesting to play a privateer, but, shrug. I think that anyone who follows some kinda alternate (ie. non-Wobbly) storyline... privateers could indeed occur. I actually did have something along those lines in my alternate timeline (which admittedly I never finished...) some of which is posted in my Strategic Battle Fleet post (the timeline... not the privateers). But, anyways... I'm just blathering.

They would be there, and would be the gray line between things.

In the Endgame novel there was a merc unit with a warship so I don't see why there couldn't be a pirate warship.

Theres what, 2 merc units with Warships? BOTH quite "Up there" units?
Wolf's Dragoons
and...
The Blue Star Irregulars.
And the Irregulars can barely keep theirs going. So, I don't see how pirates with limited supplies and limited access to the proper port facilities could. Aye, they could HAVE one MAYBE. But if they did it would be a half functioning PILE of moose dung. LOL, ok. Thats enough, just venting

Yes they are having issues, but they manage. Meanwhile a fanatic group can keep a whole army and navy running why not a band of pirate keeping a warship, say corvette, up and running...
