Just wondering if there are any fellow railroad enthusiasts around these forums
Other than Seraph and myself that is LOL.
Be it modeling, railfanning, or whatever.
I myself am a big railfan, I love to watch the trains when they come through (not often enough anymore), and this past november I took my daughter on the Polar Express. I mean the real Berkshire class loco that they used to create the digital one for the Tom Hanks movie. Pere Marquette 1225. She's a beaut. One of the best things about being from MI.
I also model, in HO and N scales. My personal layout and my daughters (Thomas the Tank Engine stuff by Bachmann) is done in HO scale. However I sometimes build HO and N scale for others, including a few coffee table layouts in N.

Not that big into railroading, but I do still have few trainsets from when I was a kid. Never really did much with them but it was fun to play with them.
I wonder how many folks on the board had a train or two as kids...

I've had trains since I was a small kid (well family has). My mom got an old Life-Like set for a 25 cent stamp heh. Some offer off a cereal box, and she already had enough tops when the thing came out. So she had to pay for the stamp to send it in, and in a couple weeks or so we had it. I grew up with it, and thats been 15-20 some odd years now.
I now run a nice freelance layout set in 1948-50. Or at least I do when I live in an big enough place LOL. My layout is disassembled and stored in my mom's basement right now. I've only got a few locos and rolling stock at my place that I'm working on. Gotta install my DCC decoders in the locos, kadee knuckle couplers in all, and do some repair and kitbashing stuff.
If you're interested in getting rid of your stuff, give me an inventory of what you've got and if I need any I'll make ya an offer on it. I'm especially looking for these locos:
EMD SW-1
EMD SW-2
EMD NW-1
EMD NW-2
Alco RS3
Alco RS11

Used to have a second cousin who had a really nice train set. Complete with trees and people. Took him years to put it together. He had a whole room devoted to his models.
It was really cool. Never had the time, money, or interest for it myself. But I always enjoy seeing nice sets.
For me, I enjoy watching trains go by. Particularly if they have interesting cargoes.
And I take a professional interest in trains since I'm a Policy Analyst in Transportation Systems Management.
Once got to see a train carrying the new military hardware to Ft. Wood in Missouri. That was the coolest one I've ever seen. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

I do. I have my dad's Lionel trains sets. They are older than I am.

HO for myself, still working on my roadname (freelance of course).
Both HO and N for others. I've built one HO layout, and 2 N "Coffee Table" layouts. I'm working on a 3rd CT layout right now. No buyer for this one, doing it to keep my skills honed... as little as they are LOL. That and cause my layout is disassembled in storage atm, and has been for 4 years.

I've recently come across this sweet simulation game. Its called Freight Yard Manager, or FYM for short. You control trains in a 2d top down environment, but it is quite fun, and you play online with others. Each player controls one or more "Yards" though not all are true yards. A lot are just maps of famous places, and ya just run incoming trains from one end to the other, where they get passed to the player who controls the next map on the line. Check it out... http://www.fymwiki.com/
It is fun as hell, so if you enjoy trains as much as I, I'll see ya there hehe. I already control 5 maps, including a busy hub called Fostoria Ohio

Fostoria?
That's not far from here and it's where I have caught the Three Rivers Amtrak train twice. One problem with Fostoria. The trains are usually crosing on the leg of the junction you aren't at. you can still see em but not really close enough to get a good shot. 3 lines through town make for some heavy action. NS has the old Nickleplate line while CSX has the B&O and C&O through town. "F" tower still stands and is occasionally manned.

I have N-guage myself Just no where to set it up. But I have 2 trains and 5 or 6 cars and about 40 buildings.

I've been to Fostoria. I gave up the map in FYM though. But I still have the Lordstown YD. I gave up fostoria cause its just a junction (can't load or unload cars).
Currently I'm running:
Lordstown, OH
Jessup, GA
Forrest Yard, TN
Apex, NC
Boylan Jct., NC
Fetner Jct., NC
All but the 2 junctions are fun to play traffic points. I'm constantly sending loaded tankers from Apex to Morehead City Port, which is only (in FYM using places represented) a short run away. In fact the route is Apex - Fetner Jct - Boylan Jct - Raleigh - Morehead City Port, so it runs down 3 of my maps consecutive, then to Raleigh, then to my buddy Ekowc in Morehead.

Oh, I like trains as much as I like any piece of heavy machinery, wich is quite a lot, but railraod modelling doesn't appeal to me... with the exception of rail artillery wich is wickedly cool and armored trains of WWII.
There's an old abandonware game called Transarctica, where the world was under an iceage and you travelled in a mighty steam armored train trading and looking for clues on the existence of the sun. Really enjoyable if very difficult. Search for it, it's free for download.
