|

I just got a-hold of an article of the internet and it is interesting: www.newscientisttech.com/article/dn11723
Basically it describes is some sort of plasma shield using Dynamic Pulse Detonation (DPD) to create a shield of bright flashes and bangs around a given area, or something like that. But what is more interesting is that they claim they have pitched to the Army a working 15 kilogram Laser "rifle" which has both lethal and non-lethal modes with a range of over a mile. I was not expecting something like this for a couple more decades. 15 kilograms is heavy for a rifle coming out to 33 pounds or about the weight of our M82/M107 anti-material/sniper rifles.
This is an amazing achievement but I wonder about what kind of power source this would use? Some kind of backpack generator may be required but that would probably be too bulky with the current technologies. It will probably require the weapon to be vehicle mounted.
I would like to know what other people think of this new technology and if it is all just a bunch of hype or if this is coming sooner than we think. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

The laser rifles honestly don't surprise me; it was inevitable that someone would come up with a working model, especially considering the fact that a lot of the tech we take for granted was directly inspired by science fiction.
IE, lasers have been a part of the G. I. Joe *and* Cobra arsenals since 1982. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

OK, along those lines, I know railguns exist. I want to know how to make one, either a railgun or a coilgun. Anyone have any suggestions?

Who by the way, is old enough to remember driving a team of horses to work, military-style crank phones, rotary phones, PCs that ran a whopping 256K of memory, 25-cent stamps, and seeing the original Star Wars in the theater (when surround sound was new).
Keep in mind, most of that was only 28 years ago or less. _________________ Storm "The More that thou sweatest and swearest in training, the less thou bleedest and diest in combat."--Dick Marcinko

I remember when no one knew what a PC was. Gas was under a dollar a gallon. _________________ Sir Henry

Which version of PC? Personal Computer or Political Correct? Or Personal Credit?
I can remember when computers came with a floppy drive for 5.25 size diskettes it was separate piece of hardware, or where you could use the TV as a monitor if you want. Pong was the coolest game around on console and the SW game on the APPLE IIe where you typed N,S,E,W and few other commands was the coolest computer game going. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato
