"It was just a matter of time" Talen says to himself as he walks down the all too-familiar street. "Just a matter of time till it caught up with me I'm sure."
He takes a left and shifts his arm holding his coat revealing a small black case barely under two feet in length. Sweat beads on his face and drips down, some of it getting into his eyes. He uses his free hand to rub some of the salty water away, but the stinging is just a minor nuisance. He makes another left and peers in the window. Beyond the glass (or the illusion of glass, Talen cant tell) sits a familiar, yet different scene. The Bar & Grill. Mordel's Bar & Grill. Talen's old haunt. Talen's new haunt.
No longer the dive it once was, Mordel had made it into a fine establishment where the weapons are kept out by a giant of a...man...named Lurch. Nothing got past him. Even if something DID get past him, it was as if time and space worked in favor of the beast. Weapons simply did not ever make it in, save for any carried by Mordel, Chihawk the barkeep or the cooking staff (a necessity given the quality of "food" that Mordel served). The patrons were mostly Mechwarriors. The low prices on the booze and the relative cheapness of the "food" kept them coming for so many years. And much like the paradoxical situation with the weapons time and space simply did not function regularly for the patrons. Many seemed like they were from a different time. Many simply do not understand the Fourth Succession War, or the Clan invasion, the Jihad...none of it after 3026 or so. A few others know more. Only a few actually seem to belong to the present. But what is the present? The here and now. And in the Bar & Grill...that could be anytime that fit the patron.
Talen had seen people fall into holes that fell meters. He had witnessed numerous attacks from small furry creatures with tails. He knew why there could be(but had never actually verified) several high powered naval grade PPCs kept in consant readiness in the kitchen. All of that was ultimately familiar to him. Yet that didn't explain the current situation at all.
In recent years, things had gone...odd. Talen's old nemesis Raven! had gotten the final laugh in their war. Clones destroyed, accounts seized, assets frozen. It had all come crashing down around him.
Thirdwave Defense Industries failed. Hopefully ICER received that last check. The bubble launchers never made the splash on the market they hoped they would. And all the other technologies...the armor-shield, the fusion-cannon. All of it was gone now. All that was left of those days was a business suit, a tattered white trench coat, a black Katana and a pair of sunglasses...
...and what was left of the Thirdwave Tactical Defense Company. 12 'Mechs privately owned and operated by his own company. All fitted with the best equipment he could supply. It was 12 'Mechs that was. Talen had been unable to properly pay the pilots. So he gave them their 'Mechs Sent them off to the world. Who knows where they were now. There were 5 'Mechs left. 5 'Mechs, 1 pilot of questionable ability. That would have to change.
That would definately have to change.
And so Talen once again finds his way to Mordel's. Where it all began.
He opens the door and approaches Lurch.
"No weapons today, Lurch." he says quietly. "The coat rack still in the same spot?"
Lurch, his usual talkative self, replies with a grunt that sounds something like an old Atlas' ankle actuator. His glare at the case in Talen's hand makes up for whatever is lost in the translation.
"This?" Talen laughs shyly. "Well, I'm not very good yet, but I'd hardly call it a weapon."
He pops open the case revealing a used-condition violin. Talen had given up much of his time and money in pursuit of a few...loftier...goals other than 'Mech piloting. Attendance of a high level academy somewhere on Earth had led him to a rekindling of his passion for music. A degree in composition was within grasp.
The violin case closed up again and Talen walked inside. The Bar & Grill had definitely gone through many changes in the last few months. New curtains and assorted other eye-candy changed the whole appearance. A few steps more and Talen is at the bar, Chihawk serving as usual.
"Long time no see, Talen" Chihawk smiles.
"Yeah, good to be back too," Talen nods. The violin gets set down on the bar stool next to him, Chihawk watching it with some interest. "RC Cola and Rum please."
Chihawk pours.
"Some mail came for you," Chihawk states casually. "Normally I wouldn't hold it for you, but I was feeling generous."
He hands a sealed envelope across the bar to Talen. It has an inverted triangle, an arm and a sword, all in emerald.
"Liao?" Talen whispers... _________________ "Historians exercise great power and some of them know it. They recreate the past, changing it to fit their own interpretations. Thus, they change the future as well." - Leto II

*SD, disturbed by the sound of approach rises his head*
A newcommer?
*realizes that the person is far from new here... and armed with violin*
Damnit!
*with heavy 'THUD' SD's head lands back on the table... now it's time to fid out whether the peanuts can be used as earplugs... rises again to order himself an extra strong tee*
*Dramatic pause*
*SD looks around*
The air feels heavy and stale lately, doesn't it? _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

"Well, we just put in a new skylight sir, perhaps an air circulation system upgrade may be in hand?"

Kalo sipped his Fusionnaire, robotic actuators in his right hand whining slightly, the synthskin stretching slightly as he gripped the glass, slightly off-color from the rest of the Star Colonel's tanned flesh. His old, gray eyes darted to the entrance of Talen, following him all the way as he strode to the bar, his gaze never leaving Talen, but his hand always moving and the alcoholic beverage slowly draining. Kalo set the now empty glass down, deciding to speak.
"I am not sure I have had the pleasure of neither your company nor your name. I assure that both are welcome. Please, identify yourself, and tell me what your drink of choice is." _________________ "I prefer to fight for a meaningful purpose, rather than to provide a spectacle for the ignorant masses."

Talen looks over to Kalo, smiles, holds up his drink in acknowledgment. The synthskin hand catches the ex-CEO's eyes, his eyebrows revealing his shock. In reference to an old 20th century Earth film Talen lifts his sleeve up over his right tricep and points to an inch long scar.
"Crystal Irukandji on Arcadia. Little stravags are invisible in the water. Could kill a Ghost Bear if it got the chance...." Talen takes a drink from his RC and Rum. "...but this is a burn mark from a bubble missile rack backfire. Took us 6 months to get the place dirty after that much soap."
Kalo doesn't respond.
"Look," Talen starts, "If God did not intend us to fight with bubbles, he would not have made them hurt when they get in our eyes!"
Talen takes another swig and calls to Chihawk for more. _________________ "Historians exercise great power and some of them know it. They recreate the past, changing it to fit their own interpretations. Thus, they change the future as well." - Leto II

"I would kill a Ghost Bear myself, if one would have the honor and decency to either accept a challenge to single combat or challenge me of their own accord. I simply cannot abide some of the Ghost Bears, why I..."
Kalo stops.
"Ah, you were speaking of the animal. Either way, I am Kalo Osis, Star Colonel commanding the 1st Striker Grenadiers." _________________ "I prefer to fight for a meaningful purpose, rather than to provide a spectacle for the ignorant masses."

Talen's face is as iced as his drink.
"Talen....Tseng," Talen lets the surname sink in. "Former CEO Thirdwave Defense Technologies, Thirdwave Defense Industries, Former Star Colonel 72nd Assault Trinary, Omega Galaxy, Ghost Bear.
Talen glares at Kalo.
"I may not be a member of my Clan anymore," Talen continues after taking a drink, "But I will defend my Clan and my Name to the death if you should wish it."
Talen puts his drink back down and signals Chihawk for another. _________________ "Historians exercise great power and some of them know it. They recreate the past, changing it to fit their own interpretations. Thus, they change the future as well." - Leto II

"Whether I would wish to take you to a Circle of Equals depends on the manner in which you left Clan Ghost Bear. Normally I would challenge you to a Circle regardless, but I am in the process of rebuilding my own Clan, I have little desire for petty personal squabbles over matters which are far behind both of us. I have my own reasons for disliking the Ghost Bears. You are no longer a Ghost Bear, ergo my enmity towards them does not translate to you. Do not be so offended, Talen Tseng, it is...how does the Inner Sphere put it? It is not personal, just business."
Kalo sips his drink, staring at a data-pad in front of him on the bar, carefully taking measure of Talen with a glance every few seconds.
OOC: I think you meant to say Assault Cluster, not Assault Trinary, given that Star Colonels command Clusters and not Trinaries. _________________ "I prefer to fight for a meaningful purpose, rather than to provide a spectacle for the ignorant masses."

Talen stares at Kalo Osis a few moments longer, then breaks out laughing.
"You are all right!" Talen smiles, "Buisness before pleasure! My kind of man. Personal honor means nothing when you have no one to bring honor to, quiaff? That was a problem with many individuals in the Clans. Personal honor over the Sibko, over the Clan, over the entire ideal!"
Talen shakes his head, takes a sip and continues talking, "You know. On Terra, back in the ancient feuding period in Japan there were those that gave up even their own personal honor to defend their families, lords and the Emperor himself. They would do whatever was necessary to ensure the survival and success of their leaders. Ninja..."
Another drink, a sigh, and a blank stare into the glass.
"We did that too. We gave up personal honor, honor for the sibko, honor for the Clan. Through it right out the hatch. Omega Galaxy! We volunteered for dishonorable duty because we saw the necessity to learn the Inner Sphere ways of combat. To forgo Zellbrigen and meet the freebirths at their own level with their own tactics. HAH! And it worked. The poor bastards never knew what hit 'em. You shoulda seen the looks on their faces and we ambushed them, ganged up on em. They couldn't beat us. They couldn't do a bleeding thing."
Talen stops for a second and pulls him self together.
"What I mean to say was that it worked too well. Some of us became so...ingrained with the Sphereoids way of thinking that we could not return to home. My days in the Clan halls were over. I left the active service before the Clan even announced their Exodus to the Inner Sphere."
Another drink, another sigh.
"As for you," Talen laughs slightly, "We each have reasons for our prejudices. Just make sure they're your reasons, and not someone elses."
Talen gets up and looks over at the pinball machine, then back at Kalo Osis.
"You rebuild your clan. Bring back your honor. But you will have to go through me one way or another if you want to take up arms against the Ghost Bear."
As he walks over to the pinball machine Kalo see's the rank insignia and unit badge on the white trench coat. Upon staring closer, Kalo eyes the patch on the violin case:
"My other day job is less painful."
(OOC: In Mechwarrior 2, Ghost Bear's Legacy you can get to Star Colonel rank and are still only in command of a Trinary (in actuality only 3 total 'mechs at any time). I assume its because its a special mission. Since all of my Clan experience comes from the MW2 games and where I adopted the character from its what I go with. In truth it would probably only be a Star Captain.) _________________ "Historians exercise great power and some of them know it. They recreate the past, changing it to fit their own interpretations. "The resurrection of my Clan takes precedent over everything. Including personal prejudices, though I wouldn't want to bait me with the idea of personal combat so...openly. Personal honor and honor for the Clan should come before such dishonorable methods as employed by you and yours. And my reasons are my own. Make no mistake, I will take you to the Circle as soon as I am able. The Smoke Jaguars are not gone, and we are not...forgiving." _________________ "I prefer to fight for a meaningful purpose, rather than to provide a spectacle for the ignorant masses."

Khan Osis, just find a nice, quiet arena to do your Circle in. Joe and I don't want to fix everything that gets broken in a Circle.... _________________ Sir Henry
