US ticket sales numbers for Friday the 24th:

All-Time Top US domestic sales:

As of the time the numbers were reported yesterday, Transformers was a mere $33,457 away from tying Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End for #23. Considering that it made $290,000 just yesterday, a similar performance today will push it over that mark.
What's more is that starting next month the movie will be re-released for IMAX theatres, and might possibly have new material. This will get repeat viewers in droves, and might push it into the #22 slot... which will mean de-throning Return of the Jedi. Making it to #20 would mean knocking down Star Wars episode II and Fellowship of the Rings.

Just remember those numbers are "actual" dollars and don't take into account the fact that movie ticket prices have risen faster than inflation.

I'd like to see a chart that reflects price changes. So if the average ticket today is $10.50, and the average ticket in 1960 was $1.50, take that into account. There must be one out there. Because the top box office movies list means nothing these days.

Looking over the list Mordel posted I don't see Transformers on it at all, I could have missed it but still it's not listed...
One thing, noting here that Star Wars and Godfather and such are sagas, they aren't stand alone movies, so shouldn't they be lumped on a different list?
And for the record Gone With the Wind is a 3 hour plus movie...compare to some of the others that might at the most be an hour and half to two hours long.

In real US dollars, it beat Pirates for the #23 spot and is less than $1 million away from unseating Return of the Jedi.

Huh? Those listed are the original Star Wars movie. Not the gross of all 3 combined. Empire Strikes Back came in at #12 and Return of the Jedi came in at #14. They may be part of a "saga", but they were all released as individual films.

Right, but given that they are part of the same movie, ie three chapters, you could say movies like that, which the Godfather falls into, would be in a separate category when looking at total money made.
Gone with Wind, and other epics aren't treated the same as movies like Terminator or Aliens yet all have made money, so do we really think that Transformers will unseat the top movie of all times or will gain a ranking and then become DVD fodder like the rest?

I don't see the argument Karagin.
When Star Wars was released, it was released as a stand-alone film. So was Godfather.
Both movies got sequels based on the success of the first movie. Regardless of how the directors viewed the sagas, the first movie was released singularly and no sequals were promised by the studio or distributors
Similarly with Back to the Future. Terminater. Probably more.
So at least the first movies are easily comprable to any other stand-alone movie.
The sequels may get a slight boost (so argued Robert Zemeckis) which might be worth compensating for, but then Gone with the Wind is getting a giant boost from lack of alternative mediums when it was released (no TV, no video, no Internet).
Now, for all of this, the Box Office Gross is remarkably uninteresting. Inflation Adjusted Net box office would be fascinating. And in that scenario, older movies murder the newer ones because they were made cheaply and didn't advertise as heavily.

I supose I should say Net before the studios do their accounting tricks to prevent a movie from ever paying off its costs.
It's the little things, like charging itself to make the DVDs...
Though it is true that a lot of modern movies lose money at the Box Office but then make it up on the DVD sales.
The saying in the studios is apparently "Even Waterworld made money!"

It just knocked Return of the Jedi out of its spot on the Domestic chart, and is just $600,000 away from beating Episode II.
An IMAX release has been confirmed for the 21st, so it will more than likely take that spot.
