Wasn't the whole point in building the Dart to avoid XL engine for greater durability and lower cost?

And in the process, FASA created a largely worthless mech.

I disagree with Dart being worthless. I rather like it is an inexpensive 'Mech, and until the Stiletto is created, I find it a good balance of cost and ability. That being said, the best variant of the Dart is the 4S version. Cheap, but it's got bite.

Not saying this one is bad, mind you. It's quite capable. But I believe the original Dart is quite handy for what it was created for.

Actually the Dart is hardly meant to face any tough opposition. The SPLs can deal with infantry and lighter vehicles and everything else should be avoided. Dart is a scout, not skirmisher. The only thing I would install on it is a BAP and maybe a TAG, but I would try to avoid XL engine at all costs.

I guess I've just been a merc too long then. I like the MLAS variant because I've found that one way or another, scouts usually end up doing some fighting, and I prefer to have a bit of bite when that happens.

If you can keep the machine to a strict regimen of observe, not engage, then really, you'd be fine going down a single SPLAS, adding the Beagle, and a half ton more armor.

*shrugs* With the small number of forces I deal with, I don't have that luxury. Scout 'Mechs are the most difficult things for me to put a liking to. They have to be tough, but cheap. Because I'll lose even the tough ones at a high rate.

Edit: Speaking of which, when did we get this nifty Kell Hounds alignment? I have been gone a long time...
