This is something I came up with for the campaign.
For whatever reason, the land in the area is unstable. Even though it may look perfectly fine, water has begun to seep into the soil to such an extent that the soil now has significant trouble supporting any weight; if something too heavy tries to cross the hex, the hex will turn into a sink-hole.
When attempting to move through a hex in an area designated as being at-risk, the player must make a piloting skill roll with a +1 target mod for every 10 tons (rounded up) that their unit weighs; hovercraft are not affected. If the unit is jumping, the modifier becomes +2 for every 10 tons.
If a unit sinks, they cannot move any further that round and are considered to be down in a sub-level 1 sink hole. They may attempt to extract themselves next round, but doing so is similar in nature to a mech trying to get up after a fall, save for no damage being sustained on a failed attempt. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." I like it with 1 change. Hover units still effect the ground with their weight; it is just done indirectly through the air cushion. I would still have hover units roll to check for sinking.
In addition, all vehicles should be forced to roll on the motive crit table to see if damage has been sustained to their drive units. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

The idea came from my present campaign, wherein the party is on a planet that was forcibly terraformed during the Succession Wars via orbital and WMD bombardment.
As part of it, some of the bodies of water have shifted from where they had originally been flowing due to land being forcibly subsided or dams being burst. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Where's the fun in that? _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)
