Primary version:
BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED
Type/Model: Brute RAC/2
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3060
Config: Wheeled Vehicle
Rules: Level 2-FA, Standard design
Mass: 40 tons
Power Plant: 140 SitiCide I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Armor Type: StarSlab 6 Standard
Armament:
1 Rotary AC/2
6 Machine Guns
Manufacturer: Quickcell Company
Location: (Unknown)
Communications System: Johnston Q-Band
Targeting & Tracking System: Scantrex Dual Tac
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Once more caught in a position of watching their aging designs fall to the
wayside due to the changing battle situations, Quikscell found itself
scrambling to modify another existing chassis for the sake of producing an
up-to-date vehicle that could pad the profit margins.
To this end, the Hetzer was tapped for alteration. Quality control had
improved markedly since 3026, such that Hetzers were actually shipping
ready-to-go. This caused a brief surge in Hetzer popularity, only for the
design to once more become regarded as a cast-off once such innovations as
high-speed combat and battle armor came to dominate the field. Were it not for
the Chaos March, sales would have begun dwindling to non-existence.
In a risky proposition, the AC/20 was repleaced with a RAC/2. This is regarded
as risky due to the fact that only one nation produces the RAC/2, and so there
is a chokehold on the overall supply. However, the much higher rate of fire,
the far longer range, and the greater ammo load are believed to compensate for
this.
Owing to complaints concerning the Hetzer having no back-up weapons, a total
of six machine guns were added: one per facing, and two in a makeshift turret.
Each gun has 150 rounds of ammo, allowing the unit to continue suppressing
infantry long after the RAC/2 ammo has been expended and thus lengthening its
ability to remain on the battlefield. It was for this, and the increased
armor, that the unit was given the name "Brute."
Of note is that the turret machine guns are set so that when resting they have
a default elevation of 15. While due to a defect in the schematics for the
turret, it has actually given the turret-mounted machine guns the ability to
better track airborne targets in exchange for a slightly harder time tracking
ground-based targets.
==Capabilities:==
For those who play by fluff:
Due to the elevation of the machine guns in the turret, the player gains a +1
bonus when engaging aircraft, jumping mechs, or any targets one level above
it. In exchange, the player suffers a -1 penalty when attacking targets on the
same level or lower.
Alternatively, a player can take a -2 penalty to take an "elevated" shot at a
battlemech; if the player succeeds, the shot goes to the punch location table
instead of the full-body table.
Note that the gun can actually depress to a -5-degree angle, but anything
below the 15-degree default position isn't normal for the system.
==Deployment==
Due to the RAC/2 only being made in one nation, the manufacturers have some
power to determine who does and does not receive these units.
At present, Quikscell is under orders not to supply any Brutes equipped with
RAC/2s to the Word of Blake whatsoever, and must obtain permission before
selling them to certain Prehiphery nations, mercenary units, and minor powers.
Quikscell is contemplating an "export" variant which uses their stock AC/5 in
place of the RAC/2 as a way to get around the restriction, but as the RAC/2 is
the main selling point it is unknown how well this export version would fare.
