After reading about aerial-launched Arrow IVs, and the possibility of launching Homing missiles from one aerospace hex away (within the ground mapsheet range of the missile) using Airborne Targeting rules for Arrow IV artillery in TacOps (p180), I decided to create a modified version of this design...

Code:
Stuka STU-DX (~3062)
100 tons  IS TW non-box set

Movement: 5/8
Engine: 300 XL
Heat Sinks: 16 [32]
Fuel: 10t

Structural Integrity: 10
Armor: 349 (Ferro-Aluminum)
  NOS:  80
  COC:  19
  LWG:  80
  RWG:  80
  FUS:  50
  ENG:  50

TAG  [NOS] 0 Heat
ERPPC  [RWG] 15 Heat
Gauss Rifle  [RWG] 1 Heat
ERPPC  [LWG] 15 Heat
Gauss Rifle  [LWG] 1 Heat
Medium Laser  [AFT] 3 Heat

Gauss Rifle Ammo (24)  [RWG]
Gauss Rifle Ammo (24)  [LWG]

BV: ??? Cost: 15,976,500 Cbills

...and switched out the gausses for Arrow IV Artillery (not the Arrow IV bomb munitions since they don't use Airborne Targeting rules - which made me wonder why Airborne Targeting rules were written if they weren't meant for the standard artillery version). Removing the rear-facing medium laser, and one heatsink, I created this version.

Code:
Stuka STU-DART (~3062)
100 tons  IS Advanced

Movement: 5/8
Engine: 300 XL
Heat Sinks: 15 [30]
Fuel: 10t

Structural Integrity: 10
Armor: 349 (Ferro-Aluminum)
  NOS:  80
  COC:  19
  LWG:  80
  RWG:  80
  FUS:  50
  ENG:  50

TAG  [NOS] 0 Heat
ERPPC  [RWG] 15 Heat
Arrow IV Artillery [RWG] 10 Heat
ERPPC  [LWG] 15 Heat
Arrow IV Artillery [LWG] 10 Heat

Arrow IV Homing Ammo (20)  [RWG]
Arrow IV Homing Ammo (20)  [LWG]

BV: ??? Cost: ??? Cbills

My question is, is it legal under any construction rules to have Arrow IV Artillery launchers on an ASF? Confused

If it is, then this will replace any mechs I have with Arrow IV (since I don't use ground vehicles for my Arrow IV needs) and will make good use of the 2 ASFs per Union I am allowed for my battalion. 8)

You need to get the new rules, the ones that the Vehicle Factory uses are out of date.

Well, that's comforting. I assume arrow IV launchers are allowed on ASF's then?

On a related note, how many external slots does/can a 100t ASF have? This is so I can better compare the Arrow IV launcher vs the external arrow IV munitions.

Seeing how I am not around my books at the moment, I can't give you the info you want. External space is limited and with the wing mounted loadout, you lose speed, thus the needed take of speed of 3 is the magic number to keep in mind.

As for Arrow IV on a fighter, sure if you want to use it in the atmosphere, I do recall reading that Arrow IV is not used in space, though this could have changed with the new Core books, again I am not able to check since books are about 6 hours away from me right now.

I highly suggest you purchase the Heavy Metal Set of BT programs, then you will have at the least the best up to date unit builder out there.

Okay, I confirmed it. TacOps lists the availability for Arrow IV artillery, and it clearly states it's available for Aerospace Fighters (as well as other units).

'Tis done, and has officially become my artillery/ground support ASF. 8)

Great now how about building it via the official rules for Aerospace fighters...using the AT2 ones.

Tech Manual and TacOps are the newest official rules for this thing.

Right and they bring the AT2R rules over with a few mods and updates, he is using a program that is still set with Aerotech rules as their bases or the broken rules of Battlespace, believe it is the Former not the latter that the Vehicle Factory used for fighters. Thus his design is not legal to use out side of his gaming group, which in this case I believe is still Mega Mek and I thought that computer simulation was up to date on the new rules?

Heh, I never went much beyond the pen and paper stage, so the designing programs are just of a secondary concern to me.

I'd give the design a try, but I'd perhaps explore a conventional fighter or bomber concept a bit more.

Manufacturer:   Lycomb-Davion IntraTech
Communications System:  O/P 9000AT
Targeting & Tracking System:  O/P 2500 TGFD
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Lycomb IntroTechnologies was one of the few firms able to compete for a
contract to construct a heavy aerospace fighter to support the Star League
Defense Forces. Lycomb designed the Stuka-class heavy fighter, a sleek,
durable craft with excellent firepower. Modifications to the Kl and K2
prototypes were introduced during production to resolve difficulties with heat
dissipation and the structural instability of the heavy wings supporting the
twin weapons pods. These modifications were retained in the STU-K5, by far the
most widely seen model of this fighter.

==Capabilities:==
Many pilots consider the Stuka a dream come true. With thirty heat sinks,
more than almost any other design currently used by the Successor States, the
Stuka can use its formidable firepower with maximum effect for a prolonged
period of time in combat.
The Stuka's Monitor 200 guidance system makes it a graceful vessel.
Despite its size, it can perform like a medium-weight craft in many
situations. The fighter has more than ample armor protection for its
structural integrity as well as its weapons systems.
Necessary modifications to increase the armor and heat sinks have reduced
this aerospace fighter's overall firepower, however. Though it carries a
variety of long- and short-range weapons, the limited number of them leaves
the Stuka outgunned by several medium fighters. Because the smaller craft lack
the Stuka's armor protection and heat sink capability, however, the Stuka can
easily defeat many better-armed foes in a prolonged battle.

==Deployment==
House Davion managed to maintain a monopoly on Stuka production, and so
very few fell into the hands of other House Lords. After the First Succession
War ruined the industrial base needed to mass-produce such craft, the
maintenance of the existing heavy fighters became a paramount concern.
When Kurita forces landed on the planet Quentin, they met with a stunning
response. Unknown to Kurita intelligence, Quentin housed a Davion air base
stocked with ten Stukas and many smaller craft. When elements of the Fifteenth
Sword of Light attempted to drop, they found themselves in a trap. The Stukas
bore down on the DropShips in orbit, flying through the hail of fire and
cutting the ships and their cargo of BattleMechs to shreds. Few of the Kurita
forces escaped, and eventually the remnants of the shattered Fifteenth were
disbanded.
The Stukas assigned to the Seventeenth Regiment of House Davion's Avalon
Hussars were given a rare opportunity for bombing and strafing on the planet
Larsha in 2930. While smaller support fighters took on the planet's Liao
defenders, a wing of eight Stukas dove down to the planet, strafing the Liao
'Mechs on the battlefield. This sudden rain of firepower opened the door to
several Davion advances.
In 2999, House Davion leaked information to Kurita spies that a flight of
Stukas operating near the Davion/Kurita border were missing, leaving the
planet Kesai IV virtually undefended. In hope of catching the planet
off-guard, House Kurita carried out a daring strike against the world.
In reality, the Davion fighters had been relocated to a small supply base
in the system's far-flung asteroid belt. They had created the false rumor as
bait to lure a Kurita attack, and it worked. While the Kurita forces bombed
the empty airfield, the Stukas moved in from the rear. Catching the Kurita
fighters low on fuel and ammunition, the Stukas were able to destroy almost
twenty craft, mostly of lighter weights.
In 3004, a Kurita convoy managed to capture a crippled Stuka near the
planet Hoff. Fully repaired, this craft later appeared in a fire support group
for Wolf's Dragoons, a mercenary unit in service to Kurita. The craft had been
painted black and refitted with slightly greater firepower.

Ah. Thank you very much Vagabond. I was going to acquire HM Aero to churn that out (I still need it to make files to import to Megamek) but yes that is nice to see. Wink

Just curious. What targeting and tracking system names correlate to the level 3 Long-Range Targeting system? Names and brands of equipment really confuse me... Confused

And lastly, is there any way to distinguish homing rounds vs regular rounds in HM Aero?

Otherwise, here is my tweaked version of that, since I decided to include CASE in the design as well.

There is no way to import Aero files into MM except to do it by hand.

The names for the Targeting system and stuff is purely fluff. The level 3 targeting gear has no given name. You just make 1 up.

No on the ammo. You set those in the MM files.

Was gonna add CASE too, but didn't cause you didn't have it.[/quote]

Shocked

How do you import them by hand?

Your assistance is deeply needed, good sir.

Navigate your MM folder --> data --> mechfiles. Open fighters and extract 1 file to desktop.

Then left click and open with notepad.

Edit the text as you want and then save as a new file.

Use the file MTF_names in mechfiles folder for weapon and equipment names.

Then copy paste your editted file in to a new folder called custom in the mechfilies folder. Load MM and double check the file.

Note: last time i tried to load a fighter (my conversion of a TIE Bomber) with Arrow IV it showed as an unknown entity and did not load the weapon on the design.

Thanks so much! Very Happy

I will try that and see if I have any luck.

EDIT: I GOT IT! Very Happy A .blk file that loads arrow IV! As far as I can tell it works. There are some snags, and a lot of rule bugs however. Homing missiles are not a choice like their ground counterparts (they have to be written in), and mechs can't be deployed with ASFs because one is a ground unit (which needs a ground map to deploy) and the other an ASF (which needs at least an atmosphere map to deploy). Thus you are stuck in the deployment phase, preventing full testing of this design.

But otherwise, I'm happy. Here is the code I used. 8)
