Well that stinks, I am not a big fan of MMO games, I am past the point where I will ever be able to play enough to get "the good stuff"

In all likelihood it will be highly playable from the get go, unless they've skipped all business planning and earlier references for micropayment games.
It will undoubtedly feature unlockables, but the basic game in itself should have enough variety to catch players' attention and keep it. Paid stuff will likely only be faster but not instant unlocks, and novelties.

Signed up.
That reviewer needs to take a chill pill. Just review instead of smashing the games roots and players. If it wasn't such a good game why develop MWT? _________________ The JadeDragon

A lot of crud games get developed mainly because some producer-assembled board thinks it's a good idea even if the markets don't.
There's plenty of flak on battletech, and it's pretty understandable given its rather aged system, which tends to be overdetailed in some aspects - but most of the criticism it gets feels plain misdirected or misinformed. In all honesty it's certainly not a straightforward, fast to catch on game.
The biggest hit seems to be that people expect it to be a modern fast-playing boardgame, while it's actually closer to a simulationist wargame. I'm not certain I would have the tenacity today to learn the game considering the multitude of modern alternatives.
*snap* That being said, I'm all in for the computer versions of the old turn based boardgame. The rule system is lightweight enough to understand, while the time consuming part of calculations and individual dice rolls is left for the computer. Makes for more BT games when they don't take as long, can be saved for later play (at least in that java game) and don't need that many people under the same roof.

You know I doubt I would have the patience to learn BT at this stage in my life now either. Still there is the universe which is what I really love more than the game itself. Renegade Legion Centurion is a better game, but the RL universe is too black and white for my tastes. Do not get me wrong I think BT is a good game. My big grip with the review is that the items he was complaining about, are not really an issue. _________________ The JadeDragon

Nitpick reviews smell like amateur.
I don't think we'll be seeing any game featuring more Battletech background than the late 80s computer games did, unfortunately!
While it's become more and more possible to fit material into games, producing it has gone up together with the expected quality. Text and still images did rather well for an audience used to tabletop RPGs, but it wouldn't compete with hours of content-limited cutscenes in the amount of shiny.
Hopefully there will be more to the massive multiplayer "faction" aspect in the upcoming BT games than just arsenal selection and decals.

It's still in Beta I believe. So you can register, but you can't play yet. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

So I got a Beta invite and have been playing a few rounds.
If anyone is interested in my "detailed" first impressions I can give some later when I get home (there is an NDA on the game).
For the quick version, its a great blend of CCG and Battletech. cards get you mechs, pilots, weapons, tech and tactics which you then build into a single unit and take a Lance to go to battle. its pretty quick vs the AI (1ish hour per match i guess?). Vs another player moves about as fast as you take turns...
Not a ton of options for match types yet, but its...well...fun. Heat, to hit, movement...all calculated for you, so very quick on the downtime aspect. _________________ Yes it Talen Tseng...again.
