Pitting classic rivals against each other first; given a relatively regular terrain - two battletech original mapsheets joined at their long sides and facing the same direction - how would you apply these lances' mechs in their tasks? Advancing against each other from the distant edges of the table, which side would you try to pick?

Davion side:
VLK-QA Valkyrie
WTH-1 Whitworth
DV-6M Dervish
ENF-4R Enforcer

Kurita side:
JR7-D Jenner
PNT-9R Panther
DRG-1N Dragon
TBT-5N Trebuchet

Given the generally chaotic and opportunistic nature of BT gameplay, it's hard to lay out specific tasks, of course. But what would be the "best use" of these mechs to start out with?

My own answers with Kurita would be to group the mechs into pairs of two according to mobility: Dragon and Jenner, Trebuchet and Panther. Advancing into battle with the Dragon if the situation presents itself, while guarding its rear with the Jenner to start with. Trebuchet would find a nice spot to fire LRMs, probably one of the relatively open-arc heavy woods, while Panther would follow up, trying to core ten-point holes for the LRM salvos to carve further into. Map edge wouldn't matter so much in this scenario. The Enforcer would naturally be a priority target, even enough to trade one. Afterwards it would be pretty much hunting, trying to put the heavier mechs' physicals into use while covering their backs with what remains of the lights. The Jenner is a good wildcard/threat piece, with its heavy alpha strike capacity to slap buttocks.

With Davion I'd probably try to take out the Trebuchet first, or at least lure it into wasting its LRM ammo. I'd take the "high ground" side given the initiative for it. The BV is a notch less but every mech is a jumper unlike the heavier Kuritas. They are pretty mobile at 5/8, but terrain and water will cut off their legged movement well. It would likely be a harassing game at first, firing from woods at the advancing enemy with a slight LRM advantage. Keeping the Enforcer around at least long enough to deplete its AC/10 ammo would be a goal, there would be plenty of jumping in woodland terrain and trying to take advantage of hills for cover. To harass the enemy enough with lighter hardware to put in some slaying moves with the Enforcer would be key, but if that fails, the enemy might overlook the Dervish. Arm bombed as it is, it's still got a decent amount of six hex punch.

Kurita -

The Panther is a born sniper, but at 3025 we're looking at a major heat curve.

Likewise, the Jenner could do some damage thanks to its mobility, but its lack of heat sinks and its thin armor are liabilities.

I'd suggest having the Dragon lead the assault, with the Trebuchet as support. The Panther and Jenner should perform hit-and-fade operations.

Davion -

The Enforcer needs to be security for the Whitworth and Dervish. It doesn't have the speed to try and mix it up, but it does have the armor and the firepower. Have the Valkyrie try to neutralize the Jenner and Panther.

Isn't the Treb more a Marik 'Mech than a Kurita? I'd go with a Phoenix Hawk PHX-1K instead, which we know is used by the Combine.

Perhaps it's more numerous in Marik than Kurita lines, but still DC does make use of Trebuchets.

Swapping out the Treb for a PHX would make for more mirrored forces, but that wasn't really what I was going for in this questionaire. Twisted Evil

For Kuritans I'd probably try to pair the Dragon with the Trebuchet and try to maneuver around and deplete the LRM ammo at medium range and trying to lure the Enforcer to waste shots. The Panther would be lagging slightly behind them and Jenner annoying whomever tries to break from the group. Then I'd try to meke the fight more personal with Dragon and now ammo-dry Trebuchet trying to catch the Withworth or cooperating with Jenner to get on Enforcer's weak rear armour.

Well being that there are 2 mapsheets and all the Davion mechs have at least one weapon that can almost shoot the width of the mapsheet, I would make the Kurita mechs come to me. So I would position the whitworth and dervish on a set of hills with the enforcer in the woods at the base of the hill and valkyrie nearby where it has LOS to the opposite side. And make the kurita mechs come across that open area at me. Depending on how you layout the sheets of course...
I would focus on taking down the Trebuchet to really stack the long range in my favor. Or the Jenner if I could get a good shot. Those are the 2 mechs that would worry me the most at first. The Jenner b/c it can get within the LRM minimum range fairly easy. And the trebuchet has the one of the better weapon loads in the scenario LRM 15 back by medium lasers. Frankly the Dragon and its AC/5 doesn't worry me until I take some damage...unless it is physical attacks. The PPC is dangerous but the Panther overheats easily and is slow. If the Valkyrie doesn't need to provide fire support I would see if it can take down the Panther. the job of the Enforcer is to prevent the Jenner or Dragon from closing with the LRM mechs.

If I was Kurita, I would focus on the Enforcer. I would get the Jenner and Dragon into medium laser range after I try and soften it up with the Trebuchet and Panther. Unless they have a good shot at someone else the Trebuchet and Panther... and Dragon on the way in all shoot at the Enforcer. The Jenner can harrass some of the LRM mechs. The Dragon can close for physical attacks if they present themselves and the Jenner can provide some close fire support to take out the Enforcer and then work on the Whitworth and Dervish. Valkyrie last because it is the least threatening. But I think it is important to get the Dragon into medium laser at the appropriate time. Its long range weapons aren't good for a heavy, but it has the best armor of any mech on the board and 2 medium lasers is just about as good as any of the Davion mechs at close range (except the enforcer). The Panther has the best weapon on the board, so if you can find a woods (on a hill is best) and snipe that would be great. If not get in a clear area so you can move around and make yourself a harder target b/c 3 of the mechs on the opposite side will be shooting you with 2 long/medium range weapons while you have 1.

Did you play out this fight?
