==Overview:==
"The Centurion. De-converting Blakists since 3072." - official marketing
slogan.
In early 3071, design teams on Caph and Northwind assembled to draw up plan
for what would become the Centurion MBT. As part of it, they were given a
challenge: "Create a medium-sized main battle tank using parts from our
allied
powers. The end result must be such that even a Manei Dominei member would
consider leaving the Word of Blake rather than face it. Money is no object
long as it performs as anticipated." After well over a year of trial and
error, the teams came up with the Centurion.
==Capabilities:==
With money not a constraint, the design teams both came to the conclusion
that
the best way to provide what was called for was to go with an XL engine and
Ferro-Fibrous armor, thereby giving the machine incredible speed and armor
protection for a fraction of the weight; it was for this same reason that a
wheeled chassis was selected rather than the tracked chassis that might
normally be called for.
The decision was made to design the vehicle around the PPC, which would
provide a good mix of range and damage while ensuring that the vehicle coul
fight even when ammo supplies were uncertain. From there, an assortment of
missile launchers were added to the mixture: SRMs to help it kill tanks and
armored vehicles, MRMs to rip apart large masses of infantry & battle armor
and LRMs to supplement the PPC in the bombardment of targets at range.
In a further nod to the need to deal with Blakist battle armor, two machine
guns and an Active Probe were installed. While the front-mounted machine gu
uses a standard mount, the machine gun on the turret is radical in that not
only can it pivot independently of the rest of the turret, it sits on an
actuated arm that can allow it to elevate, allowing it to fire around
obstructions. [Game rules: the turret-mounted machine gun can elevate to
level
2 in height.]
Realizing that there was a small hollow compartment near the rear of the
vehicle, the designers installed an infantry bay capable of holding three
soldiers. The soldiers are seated facing to the rear, and the bay door has
firing ports so that the soldiers can fire their rifles without exposing
themselves to fire, helping to further discourage infantry and battle armor
from closing. This also increases the tactical flexibility of the vehicle,
the infantry can dismount to help clear obstacles and secure buildings.
==Battle History:==
The first literal trial-by-fire came when the Centurion MBT was called upon
to
help defend Caph during the Jihad. Indeed, the presence of the Centurion
contributed in large part to the planet being such a meat grinder for the
Blakist forces, who were unable to use WMDs on the planet due to the AFNN s
rapidly claiming both air and space superiority thanks to their Nemesis,
Archimedes, Rapier, Hammerhead, Rogue, and Shilouette fighters. The Blakist
were thus forced into a more conventional ground- and water-based conflict,
which they were ill prepared for.
When used in a defensive posture, individual Centurion tanks were routinely
able to eliminate entire platoons of mechanized infantry - carriers and all
before the platoons or vehicles could muster much of a response in their ow
defense. Light tanks like the Scorpion and medium tanks like the Vedette
proved to only be of limited threat due to the Centurion's incredibly thick
armor, and generally did not last much longer than the forces they were
tasked
with escorting; enemy VTOLs also had similar trouble against the Centurion,
whose long-range firepower tended to erase their advantages in speed.
Meanwhile, Centurion crews were typically able to flank or evade outright
heavier tanks (like the Demolisher) and support vehicles (like the Hetzer),
allowing the crews to get into favorable positions to make the most of thei
PPCs and LRMs. It was even reported that a Behemoth tank was felled by a lo
Centurion that was able to make the most of the terrain the vehicles found
themselves in.
When used on the offensive, the Centurion's speed and Active Probe enabled
the
crews to pick and choose what forces they opted to encounter; combat forces
were generally avoided unless wounded, while support forces were hewn down
like so many blades of grass as the Centurions and their infantry complemen
overran their positions or chased them down. Individual mechs also frequent
fell pray to Centurion attacks, the stragglers coming under fire from range
lighter mechs tended to wither outright beneath the fire, while heavier
machines were pin-pricked and pinned down so that they could be finished of
by either additional Centurions or air support.
