Something I've been thinking about.

Suppose, for a second, that all of the players in your group decided that instead of playing mech pilots they wanted to be infantry.

How would you handle that sort of campaign?

LOL! Suddenly you're not playing BattleTech anymore.

We tried that once with both BATTLETROOPS and CLANTROOPS got boring really fast and two of the guys wanted to used SQUAD LEADER rules vs the FASA rules since the former made more sense and FASA's were well less then up on the whole fast moving part of combat.

And given the visible lackluster level of of support the two infantry based games got from TPTB along with BATTLEFORCE, it showed in how the fans responded to them as well.

Well, patrolls, sabotage, infiltration, ambushes. infantrists would be interesting but they should be ready to reroll often?

i would force it to be a Mechwarrior campaign if its not already. Then if they all agreed, they would either need to be specops or a group willing to have low combat, more social games.

This is really up to the group. An all infantry game can be as interesting or boring as a DnD or Shadow Run campaign is normally. Its just rather then dragons and magic you get Mechs.

Possible mission ideas that I came up with:

1. Blakist operations in this sector are coordinated in part via an outpost that was set up in a house located on a small island in the middle of a river; the rather irate owner (who was forced to flee the property before he could even move in) has linked up with the resistance and has supplied us with the blueprints. A hastily-built guard tower sits on the front lawn, a hover APC and a hover truck sit next to the boat dock, and a Ferret VTOL is parked out on the back lawn. Spotters have observed the Blakist troopers stationed inside the house to be shockingly lax, essentially treating the place as if it was an R&R facility. As part of it, only the lone guard in the tower and perhaps a lone comms technician are awake at night. Swim onto the island from the rear, then move into position to seize the facility.

2. Resupply for the outpost comes once a week, when a Karnov lands on the banks of the river and sends out hover trucks with various items. The partisans indicate that since no SOS was sent from the outpost, the supply run will take place as normal. As such, you and several partisans will take positions in order to rush the helicopter once it lands and capture it.

3. Seems the Blakists have finally figured out that something is wrong. Four Ferrets are being deployed to investigate. Fortunately, we found several LRM launchers on the Karnov...

4. We've been able to get a cavalry unit (hover tanks and infantry) to deploy on the river banks in order to provide a defensive screen for the outpost, and a lance of friendly mechs is sweeping the area in case more Blakist forces are on the way. But rather than wait for their arrival, we're going to turn the tables on them. Intel *thinks* it has the location of the supply depot the Karnov took off from. Your mission is to take one of the captured hover trucks and cause a diversion, at which point partisans will swarm the depot. We'd prefer it if you could somehow take the facility, but if you can't then treat this as a smash-and-grab.

5. We've identified the location of the helibase that the Ferrets were launching from. Take the hover APC and strike at the facility. Capture it if you can, but if you can't then destroy whatever targets you can take out.

6. - 10. The good news is that we now have this sector; without the depot, helibase, and outpost, the Blakist forces in the area are in complete disarray and are being pushed back. The bad news is that we have reason to believe some of the Blakist forces are splitting up into patrols in the hopes of conducting guerrilla warfare. We need you to take turns sweeping various areas in order to help flush out any Blakist forces that might be left.

May be somewhat crazy of me, but now I'm thinking what would happen if the PCs were all civilians and a military NPC was having to lead them in guerrilla operations.

I think it could be fun IF the players are a go.

Could be a great use of non-combat life paths.

Just for something different, I went ahead and rolled up some sample characters for such a campaign; if nothing else, it gave me an excuse to "play-test" some life paths I brewed up.

The hypothetical campaign would take place during the Blakist Jihad, and would involve a military intelligence officer banding together with a trio of civilians he rescued from the WoBblies.

The officer himself is the son of a minor noble and pilots as Phoenix Hawk. On one hand, he presents himself as a charming rogue. On the other hand, he's deep black ops and so can kill pretty much anyone he wants to kill at his leisure.

Civilian #1 used to be the female half of a popular husband / wife televangelist team, but when she discovered that her husband was embezzling money from the ministry he responded by framing her and divorcing her during the trial; although she was ultimately cleared, the damage was done to her career. She's the "face" of the group, but because of her formerly-sheltered life she doesn't have much else to offer.

Civilian #2 is a one-time professional athlete who was smart enough to realize that his career wasn't going to go much further and so went to a technical school. Not only is he handy in a fight, he's also a skilled mechanic who knows enough to keep the Hawk up and running.

Civilian #3 is a spoiled rich girl whose short-lived time as a celebrity paid for her to be able to attend medical school. Not only is she a doctor, she's also a trained helicopter pilot.
