Coming up in Scorpio Ascendant is a major overhaul and redesign of this venerable chassis. Which I will give you folks now. Ladies and gentlemen, my own Hellbringer II: As It Should Have Been.--MA
Overview
Ah, the Hellbringer. This is perhaps the prime example of how the canon OmniMechs were deliberately neutered. Certainly, with 28.5 tons of pod space and 13 fixed DHS, it was capable of bringing Hell down upon its opponents. But the design teams fitted it with STANDARD internal structure and just EIGHT TONS of standard armor.
To put that in perspective, a 3025 Phoenix Hawk (a 45-ton Medium-weight 'Mech) carries that same 8.0 tons of armor. NOT GOOD for a 65-ton Heavy-weight BattleMech that is supposed to be one of the most common Clan Heavy OmniMech in existence.
The shame is, by using Endo-Steel and Ferro-fibrous(11 tons for 100% of the maximum armor protection allowed on a 65-ton chassis), we can STILL have that 28.5 tons of pod-space! But now on an OmniMech that doesn't die when their opponent sneezes!
The second problem was the pod-configurations . . . which we are now addressing.
Our Hellbringer (AISHB) Prime very much resembles the old canon version . . . but there are differences. Instead of two ER PPCs (and their HUGE heat costs), we instead carry one ER PPC and one Large Pulse Laser. Backing up the big guns are three ER Medium Lasers and a Streak SRM-6 with a ton of ammunition for 15 salvoes. Plus, an Active Probe, ECM, TAG, and Anti-Missile System with 24 bursts. AND two Machine-guns (100 bursts of fire) for anti-personnel work.
And ALL of those energy weapons are tied into a Targeting Computer. Where did the weight savings for this come from? We dropped the four useless A-Pods and increased the onboard DHS from 13 (in the engine)to 14. That means our Prime can run at range while firing the AMS, ER PPC, and LPL all day long and remain heat neutral. In close, exchange the peeper for the three ER Mediums and it is still good. When the Streak locks, it will overheat . . . but you can take one ER Medium out of the firing loop to compensate.
Configuration A always had me scratching my head: six shots for the LRM, six shots for NARC, and twenty for Ultra AC-5? Ten double taps? Absolutely ridiculous ammunition loadouts for this 'Mech . . . ours changes that. We keep the twin ER Large Lasers in the left arm, but replace the UAC-5 with an LB-5X
(with TWO tons of ammo for twenty shots each of slug and cluster). Instead of the NARC/LRM-20 combo, we instead carry an LRM-15 with Artemis IV and THREE tons of ammunition (24 salvoes). Instead of the Active Probe, this long-range combat unit carries an ECM Suite. Finally, we increase the DHS from 13 to 16 . . . making us perfectly heat neutral on a run when firing all weapons. Our weapons reach is outstanding and our endurance is good enough.
Configuration B had potential . . . but once again, lack of ammunition damned the design. We keep the Gauss Rifle but boost the payload to TWO tons (16 shots), but replace the LB-5X autocannon with an ER PPC. NOW we have two 15-point head-cappers, one of which doesn't rely on ammunition. For close-in work, we have two Streak SRM-6 launchers sharing a single ton of ammo (15 salvoes, but for STREAKS, this should be enough), plus an ER Medium Laser and an ER Small Laser. Just the standard 13 DHS are mounted, so the Hellbringer (AISHB) C runs a bit on the hot side if it runs and both Streak lock onto target . . . but it is manageable.
That is it for the canon 3050 configs, but I have a few ideas of my own.
Configuration C is a jumping Hellbringer, with five jump jets. There are two models, the C1 and C2. These are almost identical, with each carrying two ER Medium Lasers and a Flamer in the left arm (with lower arm and hand actuators), a Streak SRM-6 launcher with one ton of ammo (15 salvoes) in the left torso, and either an LB-20X autocannon with four tons of ammunition (C1) or an Ultra AC-20 autocannon with four tons of ammuntion (C2). The C1 also carries two Machine-guns and a half-ton of ammo, whereas the C2 replaces those weapons with a 14th double heat-sink. This model is based on the old Victor assault-weight BattleMech and it does bring the pain.
For Config D, I have to start by saying I hate the Naga. When you have OmniMechs, why build one SOLELY for artillery? Why not have configurations that carry artillery that you can sub-in and -out as needed? My Hellbringer (AISHB) D is an artillery configuration. It carries an Arrow IV with four tons of ammunition (20 shots), plus a Large Pulse Laser, three Medium Pulse Lasers, and a Flamer for self defense. It can provide on-call artillery support while defending itself, and even if artillery is bid away, it isn't useless on the battlefield!
Configuration E is based (loosely) on the canon Config F. Armament is an LB-10X autocannon in the right arm (with three tons of ammo for 30 shots!), a Large Pulse Laser in the left arm, two ER Medium Lasers (center torso and left torso), and an ATM-6 launcher with three tons of ammo (for 30 missile salvoes and the possibility of having all three ammo types). A 14th DHS allows the Hellbringer E to remain perfectly heat neutral even on a running alpha-strike and the deep magazines make it excellent for conducting operations when resupply might be 'iffy'.

Clans would have been too... but really full armour and the best carrying capacity makes the 'Mechs too alike and gets old quickly.
Hellbringer deserves a refit, but it doesn't have to follow the Timber Wolf path. Besides it already got mk. II treatment in TRO 3145. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
