So I have been working on a space station in HMAero (I just got it again for Christmas, love my mother in law), but I digress. I have been wondering about not the overall weight being an issue but the over all size of the station its self. How big would too big be? Having looked at some of the others they look actually small to be building some of the different ships and warships. And very small to be system defense stations.

So here is my concern I have been working on one at the largest size available (2.5 million tons) its a bigger version of the one I posted earlier. And originally it was making the size around 1500 meters. But with 3 pressurized construction/repair yards in it supposedly capable of servicing ships up to 750 thousand tons in the largest center bay it felt like that was way to small. So I started playing with the sizes right now I have it at 6000 meters then realized that that was around 4 miles across, its a spheroid, so it inadvertently became the deathstar. And started to wonder is that to large?

So here is my question what would be too large in the battle tech universe? Would a space station that measured 4 miles across be feasible? Or is it ludicrous? Or at 2.5 million tons with everything you can imagine on it would it be OK to go even larger?

Some of its basic stats
Holds 50 dropships.
12 battalions of fighters (216 fighters)
72 various small craft
HPG station.
1 battalion of marines
2 companies of armored troopers

And I am not worried about the price at this time, I know it's expensive but considering its a Multi purpose facility (system defense, ship repair, and a trading and way station) and will be built on sight. And considering a modern day jet fighter runs something like 159mil each(F-22) and a modern day super carrier is in the ballpark of 12.8billion (USS Gerald Ford) and we have 10 of them in our fleet right now. The station I am working on is topping off at over 200 trillion. So its pricey but will be paid for like all other military equipment. Over time.

um, Stinger, bigger space station means:
*more parts required to make it that aren't used for smaller space stations
*bigger profile makes it easier to hit by attacks so it'll take more damage
*harder to hyperspace jump to another location via spacevessels
*harder to conceal from targets
*easier to see by friendlies
*harder to get through a minefield if it's to be hyperspaced & towed in opposition's space
*costs more
*while it's under construction, it can't be hyperspaced easily to benefit friendlies that're attacked.

Ok so I posted it here.

Obviously.

Yes, it will. 40 thousand tons of armor (6779 points of armor per side). I actually think it can take a lot of punishment and be ok.

It also mounts a silly amount of weapons that can dish out just as much as it gets.

Yeah. at 2.5 million tons it wont be moved from location to location. It's a permenent object now in Terra space.

It's for system defense. It's not ment to hide. When invaders jump in it basically says: "Hi. You get to go through me in order to try and take this system. Good luck."

Is that ment to be a negative?

Not relevant it weighs too much. Ment to defend Terra. Wont move ever.

Right. 217 billion c-bills

IT'S A SPACESTATION. THEY DONT MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE. That is what Warships are for.

I think the only thing it could have problem with is an asteroid being directed toward it, but that could be a problem for planets as well.

SO pg.63- SPACE STATIONS
Space Stations, like JumpShips, are essentially static in aerospace
combat. Unlike JumpShips, however, a Space Station’s
station-keeping drive lacks the power to provide even rudimentary
changes in velocity within the context of a game; any
repositioning of a station requires hours if not days to achieve,
the drive generating only around 0.1 G.

I thought the same thing, but as the rules allow for rudimentary movement in the hours to days scale then as long as you see the roid or mass projectile a day or more out then you can move enough. However, this is not to say that a 'finger of god' accelerated up to 0.2c (199,862 hexes per turn) would be EASY to spot.

If my math is correct:
0.2c = 59,958,491.6 meters / sec = 59,958.5 km / sec = 3,597,510 km / min
space hex in BT = 18 km = 1 TP = 18 km / min
3,597,510 km / min @ 18 km / min = 199,861.667 hexes per turn.

The High Speed Engagement rules allow for speeds up to 5,001+ hexes per turn or 90,018 km / min or 1,500.3 km / sec or 1,500,300 m/s. All kinetic damage at this speed is x4 damage. Damage from a ram is [mass/10]*velocity.

So a KKV aimed at a station and accelerated up to 5,001 hex per turn or 0.005 c would cause massive damage. But a 10 ton KKV accelerated up to 16,953 hexes/turn or 5,085,900 m/s or 0.017 c would punch a hole in your station.

16,953 hex/min
16,953*18= 305,154 km/m = 305,154,000 m/m = 5,085,900 m/s.

Example of KKV:

Well, if the asteroid got detected on time the station could use dropships to tow it away, but throwing a few dense objects just to cause enough damage and then following with regular invasion could do it IMO.
