Hi Guys,

Not posted here for a while but been playing a lot of battletech. Myself and a friend have been working on a few custom rules and weapon/ammo types to spice up our own large games (current game is 32 vs 32 mechs!).

This is my first custom weapon up for review by you experts. Now I understand there is already rules for shields in additional rules. But I found these both confusing and not well implemented. So heres my take.

Game Rules

The Armour Shield is simply a slab of armour that can be carried around by a Mech with a hand Actuator. Shields come in two varieties and protect certain parts of the Mech’s body for certain drawbacks. All shields are made entirely out of conventional armour and are allocated armour depending on their tonnage (8 points of armour per ton). Shields follow normal hand held weapon rules in regards to weight (1/10 of mech weight max)

Large Shield

A large shield is a rectangular shield that covers the Battlemech’s corresponding arm, leg, torso and centre torso. Any damage that would usually strike these locations instead hits the shield. A Mech can only walk while holding a large shield and cannot fire any weapons mounted in the covered locations. A large shield can only be used to cover the Mech’s frontal arc, any attackers firing from the defending Mech’s side or rear arcs are not intercepted by the shield.

Small Shield

A small shield is a rounded or heater style shield that covers a Battlemech’s corresponding arm and torso. As with the large shield any weapons mounted in the protected locations cannot fire but a Mech mounting a small shield can run and jump as normal. A small shield can also be faced towards the Mech’s c corresponding side torso, giving extra protection to the side torso and arm from that side direction only. A Mech mounting a small shield must declare which direction the shield is facing when declaring torso twists. A small shield can also be raised, so the torso is clear to fire (and be damaged).

Additional rules regarding shields

Dropped through damage

If a large or small shield absorbs half of its armour value in a single turn. The carrying Mech must make a pilot skill roll with a + 3 modifier. If the roll fails the shield is ripped from the Mech’s hand and dropped in the current hex. The shield can be picked up and used again in later end phases.

If a shield absorbs 75% of its armour value, there is a significant chance the shield will shatter. The carrying Mech must make a pilot skill roll with a +5 modifier. If the roll fails, the shield shatters and is useless. The carrying Mech receives no damage.

Once a shield sheds all of its armour, it automatically shatters and any remaining damage is applied to the location it originally would have hit following usual transfer rules.

Shield Bash

A Mech mounting a shield can use it for physical attacks. If the attack is successful the shield deals damage based on its tonnage. For example, a shield weighing 4 tons deals 4 damage. There are slight differences in how large and small shields work.

To hit modifier/ Hit table/ Defending pilot skill?
Large| -2 / Normal / Yes +2
Small| 0 / Punch / No

A shield is primarily a defensive weapon, as such when used in attack it suffers damage. Upon a successful bash, a shield receives damage calculated by its weight divided by 2, so a 4 ton shield receives 2 damage.

I haven't implemented a majority of the advanced rules into my mech design program yet (including shields), so I'm not sure how your version differs from what is in Tactical Operations. In the near future I'll start implementing advanced and experimental equipment, so I guess I'll find out.
