So, I've been slowly but steadily getting friends into Battletech of late, and finding some old hands at the LGS hidden in the woodwork. A friend and I have decided to host/manage an intro to BTech style league, where players can manage a small stable of warriors on Solaris and worry about repairs and ammo costs and all that fun stuff. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas or advice for something like this.

Run it like a bloodbowl league.

Offer an evolving market for weapons/items and pilots..
Use character traits and special pilot abilities in A Time of War (but not a full RPG character).
Use the basic character advancement rules in Total War with an trait/ability option. (bloodbowl uses a random table for advancement).
Use repair rules to allow unit customization.
Run thing on a week to week bases (40 hour work week).

In bloodbowl, the players compete in Cups of X teams with a win awarding 3 pts, tie 1, and loss 0. The winner of the cup gets the cup and a purse/prize.

Each game pits 1 team vs another with the two being awarded a income after the match based on if they won or lost. It generally allows the looser to obtain a minimum team to play.

Another option used are inducements which give a lesser team funds to use to try to even their team out in select ways. They can higher free agents and get minor enhancements.

You run a season of X number of cups, then reset everything.

If this is real life, you can offer physical items as the cup as an incentive.

That is my advice.

I guess I should mention some of the things that already got decided.

I'm going to make it fairly informal, and set up on a monthly basis. I've seen league and tournaments around here with weekly required meetings, and not a one of them has survived to the end. Plans so far will be to roll on a 'random' condition table to see what the market is that month (ammo is more expensive, parts for a certain weight class are cheaper, etc.) and to see what special units are for sale on the open market. The players are free to have a match with whoever else in the league they want whenever they get the time, and they email the results to me so I can update the official info sheet. Damage and ammo would be permanent between fights, and they'd need to spend their winning on repairs and replacements. Just going to assume freelance techs working for everybody, so only tracking cost and time for that.

As for the matches themselves, a major goal of this is to be a re/introduction to the rules for anyone who wants to play, so the actual fights will be standard one-on-one, nothing special with the rules. Will be using pilot advancement, of course.

Money-wise, still working on the specifics, but after each fight, both combatants take home a share of the pot, with the winner getting more, obviously. Also including a 'league insurance' clause; if any player fights in at least two matches per month and doesn't get a certain minimum amount of income, the league will pay the difference, to keep them in the game.

What I really need help with is deciding on money levels; how much do players start with to buy their starting mechs (and they need at least three), and how much to set match pots at *and* how much to charge for repair service.

Lazy and slow is me, but at long last, the rules have gotten written up and are ready for public screening. If y'all have the free time, would you mind giving these a once-over to see if there's any gaping holes I left in there?
