================================================================================================
Overview:
The relationship between Clan Raven and the citizens of the Outworlds Alliance started off
rocky, and hasn't improved as much as many would desire. One effort to address this resulted
in the Corax light OmniFighter. Another has now resulted in the Alliance's first OmniMech,
based on the long-standing Locust, the first 'Mech that the Outworlds Alliance ever
produced.
Capabilities:
Utilizing a mix of Clan and Inner Sphere technologies, the Omni-Locust (as some call it)
packs a lot of 'Mech in a very small package. The design is built around a light endo-steel
frame of Inner Sphere origin, but mounts a Clan-tech extra light type 200 fusion engine,
allowing the 'Mech to run at a rate of 162 kph. This speed can be increased to 216 kph for
short bursts utilizing Myomer Acceleration Signal Circuitry, allowing this Locust to match
the mobility of the Clans' Fire Moth. In addition to these weight saving measures, the 'Mech
also includes an extra-light gyro designed by Inner Sphere engineers. Additionally, although
some find it cramped, the small cockpit provides additional savings in mass that are applied
in other areas. Finally, three and a half tons of Clan made ferro-fibrous armor nearly
maximizes the protection on the 'Mech.
All of these weight savings leave the design with 7 tons of pod space, which is used in a
variety of ways in its various configurations, most of which use weapons of Clan-level
technology.
The prime configuration is the most popular, and serves as a general purpose skirmisher,
mounting 3 extended range medium lasers between the arms and the head. The arms also each
contain a SRM-2 and an AP gauss rifle, with each pair fed by a ton of ammunition.
Alternate Configuration A is a dedicated long-range fighter, with a head-mounted ER large
laser, and a LRM-5 located in each arm. The two LRM packs are fed by a single ton of
ammunition stored in the LT.
Alternate Configuration B is an anti-infantry nightmare, with its head-mounted improved
heavy medium laser backed by a quartet of flamers, and a whopping 8 light machine guns tied
into machine gun arrays. Each arm contains a flamer and an array of four of the machine
guns, while the remaining flamers have been placed in each side torso. The machine guns are
fed by a full ton of ammunition in the left torso, which is protected by CASE II.
Alternate Configuration C is the electronic warfare model. The right torso has been fitted
with a clan-tech Angel ECM suite, while the left torso contains an Inner Sphere-made
Bloodhound Active Probe. A light TAG system mounted in the head rounds out the extra
electronics. Offensively, the weapons payload is limited to an extended range medium laser
in the head, and a pair of arm-mounted extended range small lasers. This configuration is
also capable of the fastest ground speed of all models, as the last half ton of pod-space
has been used to mount a super-charger.
Alternate Configuration D emulates the same configuration of the Fire Moth, with five
extended range medium lasers tied into a targeting computer. The primary difference is that
the Fire Moth's anti-infantry flamer has been replaced by an additional double heat sink to
help address heat issues.
Alternate Configuration E serves as an anti-vehicle model, with a pair of extended range
medium lasers mounted in the head, and a SRM-6 in each arm, fed by two tons of missiles
found in the left torso. Most often, at least one ton is used for Infernos.
Alternate Configuration H emphasizes close-in firepower, with a head-mounted improved heavy
medium laser, and arms that each contain an improved heavy small laser and an ATM-3
launcher. Two tons of ATM ammunition have been stored in the left torso.
One final configuration is the most unusual. Designed as a dedicated riot control model,
this configuration mounts a fluid gun in the head fed from a ton of its ammunition in the
left torso which often just contains water. Each arm contains a SRM-2 and a pair of light
machine guns. The ton of missiles in the left torso normally has tear gas warheads, and the
half ton of machine gun ammunition in the right torso is usually of rubber bullets. Finally,
some minor lethal payload was included with the placement of an extended range micro-laser
in each arm.
Deployment:
The Omni-Locust has only begun deployment within the last decade, but has been a decent
success. However, there are some among the Alliance citizenry that question if the Snow
Ravens are even really trying to ingratiate themselves in their new home, or just placate
the populace. These citizens point to the fact that the Locust is about the smallest and
weakest 'Mech around. However, those who do this have not really been paying attention to
just what they have gained with the design.
