Overview:
Years ago, a friend and I cooked this up over a faction chat channel on the BattleTech:
Frontierlands MUX, as a hypothetical counter to the "new" Assault 'Mech added to the game at
the time, the Imp, which many players were using to dominate every scenario. While the
Giantslayer has its flaws--no CASE, a fragile XL engine and absolutely no ranged capability
outside of its main weapon's barely adequate long-range bracket of approximately 360
meters--it still would most likely be a highly effective heavy flanker and headhunter.
Capabilities:
Taking inspiration from the THR-1L Thunder's concept of a fast-moving AC/20-wielding Heavy
'Mech, we took things one step further than that and upgraded the chassis by five tons and
the cannon to an Ultra class with a plentiful five tons of ammunition, increasing the engine
size to maintain an 86 kph top speed In lieu of the Thunder's cluster of medium pulse
lasers and an LRM-5 for token long-ranged firepower, we decided to focus on exploiting the
excellent armor-breaching capability of the Ultra autocannon. To that end, we chose a pair
of SRM-6s equipped with Artemis IV as backup weapons, drawing on a ton of ammo per launcher.
The SRMs were mounted one per side torso, and the Ultra AC/20 was mounted in the right arm,
the lower arm and hand actuators having been removed to do so. The end result: A
fast-moving, brutally hard-hitting threat that could not be ignored even by Assault 'Mech
pilots.
Deployment:
Unfortunately, the player population of Frontierlands has all but disappeared, and the
design was never tested on any MUX, on the tabletop, or in Megamek, although I plan to use
it soon in the latter two.
