Overview:
Almost immediately after completing the work on the Hatchetman, Dr. Banzai and his team
began work developing even larger versions of this BattleMech. The most commonly known
successor to the Hatchetman was the Axman, a heavy-weight BattleMech, but it was the
prototype Nightsky that actually reached the field first.
Capabilities:
Initially known as the ?Macheteman?, the BattleMech that would become the Nightsky was
designed to be a far faster and more mobile version of its parent design, the Hatchetman. To
accomplish this feat, Dr. Banzai?s team worked to enlarge the design slightly so that its
greater mass would enable the stronger myomer muscles of the machine to swing the axe with
enough force to cleave through the armor protecting the head of any BattleMech of that era.
Mating that increased mass to a type 250 fusion engine and five jump jets allows this
BattleMech to run at greater than 86 kph and make leaps up to 150 meters across.
Having resolved the mobility concern, the team then decided to give their design a thick
armored hide to allow it to withstand considerable punishment. 9.5 tons of armored plate
provides the frame with virtually 90% of its maximum possible armor load, but reduced the
weapons payload to a mere possible 10.5 tons; just over 20% of the mass of the machine.
Reviewing their options, the possibility of mounting auto cannons was tossed aside
immediately due to their restrictive mass. It was felt that small missile packs would not
truly work for the design, as they would also make the machine vulnerable to explosions of
stored ammunition. Turning to energy weapons, the team found an effective mix of all laser
types, combining a single heavy laser in the arm opposite the axe with twin medium lasers in
either side torso. A singular light laser mounted in the head above and behind the cockpit
rounds out the weapon package. Three additional heat sinks were added to the design to help
dissipate the heat from repeated firing of its energy payload.
Deployment:
Although the initial prototypes were found to be fine BattleMechs, recovered technology from
the Star League era was made available before production began. Knowing that the Macheteman
would benefit greatly from such advantages as double strength heat sinks and pulse lasers,
the decision was made not to begin building more of these BattleMechs until an even better
model could be created. The result of this redesign would become the NGS-4S Nightsky.
