Overview:
The origins of the Panzerwerfer can be found in a long-discarded concept for a fire-support
‘Mech based on the Scorpion. The design was based on the inherent stability of the
Scorpion’s quad chassis combined with a more massive leg joint that included increased shock
absorbent capabilities. However, the disastrous reception given to the smaller quad design
forced the original engineers to quietly shelve the concept.
There the design would have remained save for a Daimler engineer finding the concept
files where they had been forgotten, and realizing the ability that the innovative leg
joints would have in smoothing out the jarring ride of previous quad designs. The
engineering team at Daimler MechWerks worked out a full set of plans and found that the
engineering was sound. The design was paired with a new missile launch system that had
also been in development at Daimler and put into production as the Panzerwerfer.
Capabilities:
The Panzerwerfer is designed to be a heavy indirect-fire support ‘Mech like the smaller
Archer or Bombardier combined with extremely heavy armor protection, a stable quad chassis,
and jump capability. While the larger ‘Mech is not as fast as the smaller units, the jump
capability does give the Panzerwerfer better mobility if opponents manage to get too close.
It can be disconcerting to see something so massive suddenly fire its jump jets after
firing a full barrage of missiles.
The firepower for the PzW-4R is concentrated in the Daimler Nebelwerfer LRM-20 launchers.
Using a simple launch system, the Nebelwerfer is able to launch all 20 missiles in a
shorter amount of time than other comparable launchers. The launchers are supplied with 4
tons of ammunition each, with the ability to select between different warhead types if
needed. A single Coventry five-tube LRM launcher was added to allow for either additional
firepower or to be used to putting smoke rounds to Mark a target. Two Defiance medium
lasers were added for close-range defense when the ‘Mech needs to pull back to reload.
The smooth ride of the Panzerwerfer has come as a pleasant surprise to ‘MechWarriors who
have only heard the horror stories about the rough handling of other quad ‘Mechs. The
Daimler engineers have been proven correct regarding the shock-absorbent qualities of the
leg joint design, with the massive armor adding still more ability to absorb kinetic energy,
even when landing after a jump. This has translated into a highly accurate chassis for
long-range combat, making the Panzerwerfer one of the more reliable fire-support ‘Mechs
available.
Deployment:
The Panzerwerfer has only been seen in Steiner forces, usually with Guards assault units.
The slow time to manufacture the complex quad chassis has meant that the ‘Mech is not a
common sight, even in the LCAF.
Variants:
There are two main variants seen of the Panzerwerfer. The first replaces the Nebelwerfer
launchers with two BlazeFire larger lasers, two Federated 10-Shot LRM launchers with two
tons of ammunition each, and extra heat sinks. While it runs hotter than the original, it
is a highly proficient siege fighter. The second variant replaces the two launchers with a
Federated 10-Shot LRM launcher with two tons of ammunition and a massive Defiance
‘MechHunter autocannon with 4 tons of ammunition. This turns the ‘Mech into an excellent
urban defender.
