...of a gun called the AR-15? Has anyone ever fired one (army personel have probably fired the full-auto version).
For those that do not know, the AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16 (which means that it is not full-auto).
This weekend I got a chance to shoot one that my uncle has. It is a nice gun. Same kick as a 12-gauge shotgun, but a really crappy sight (a spike on the barrel and a "donut" at the back). My cousin managed to turn it into an expensive way to open a walnut shell from a distance.

I have a buddy that had one (he's long since moved to South Dakota)....
I didn't fire it but I will say it was loud.

Is it still chambered for 5.56 rounds like the M-16A2? I don't think most states allow military calibers like that...

I have. Also a M-16, M-14, M-1 Garrand, M-50 and a few handguns.
My friend was on the Navy rifle team, and he let me shoot some of his collection.
The M-1 has a kick like a pissed off mule, but it's accurate to 300 yds. I was hitting the 7 ring at 275 yds.

All in all, a nice weapon. We use a modified version of the M-16A2 up here that we call the C-7. We also put a scope on all of ours, although it's never really been loved by the soldiers. It was brought into service in order to get the clerks and cooks to pass their basic rifle handling tests. They're expensive, and break too easily, but are really nice to shoot with, as long as you have the time to aim!
Alexander (What are the rules down there about magazines on civilian weapons? Up here it's no more than a five round mag.) _________________ War is God's way of teaching geography.

Depends on the weapon. Handgun, is it's original mag. If it's a Thompson, you can put a barrel on it.

We have a friend that I go to the shooting range with (not anymore he's in Maine). He had an M-16. 2 settings: Single and full auto. full auto is a bitch to handle

Military caliber? The 5.56 is barely adequate for small game hunting
Anyone hunting large game, like moose and bear, is going to have something a lot more powerful than 5.56... Like a .308 at the very least.

Heard of it? Yes. Fired one? No. I`ve only used the Finnish Sako/Valmet assault rifles chambered in 7.62*39 Russian. Stable and accurate, especially with the improvements made to the model 92 and 95. The ability to mount scopes and a silencer makes the newer models quite nice to use. OK, so it`s not really silenced, only suppressed, but that helps a lot. It sounds like a standard .22LR rifle being fired instead of something bigger.

Then how are you to know what gun is being fired at you if you can't hear it???

The AR15 is chambered for 5.56 NATO, which is the same thing as the civilian .223. Just like the 7.62 NATO is the same as the .308.

That`s sort of the point of using a sound suppressor in the first place, innit? In addition to muddling the sound it also kills the muzzle flash close to 100%, so spotting the shooter is really hard. There isn`t even the telltale dust cloud you usually puff up when shooting from a lying-down position.
