Overview:
Most of humanity is very familiar with the Rifleman BattleMech, but few remember that it
began from very humble origins centuries before the Succession Wars, much less the Clan
Invasion, the WOB Jihad or other later conflicts. Most that do conceive of this notion think
the RFL-1N was the first model of this machine, but there was actually an even earlier
model, the 1X.
Capabilities:
Produced with primitive components, the RFL-1X Rifleman was a machine that came too early.
Conceived as a sniper, the engineers that developed this machine gave it its name based on
its two primary weapons, a pair of heavy rifles. It was thought these guns would allow the
machine to put range most opponents and pick them off at a distance despite their relatively
poor performance against the more modern armor types that were then being developed (and
which were incorporated into its own design). However, testing soon proved the weapons were
inadequate for the job at hand, and had in-any-case become overshadowed by either the harder
hitting heavy lasers and/or the more versatile and less ammo intensive autocannon.
This led to the RFL-1X to be returned to the drawing board and replaced with the RFL-1N.
